TRUCKEE, Calif. - A motorcyclist was shot to death on Interstate 80 near Truckee, prompting authorities to close the highway for hours to investigate, the Associated Press reported Saturday night.


The California Highway Patrol said three motorcyclists rode up to the victim Saturday afternoon and fired gunshots before taking off. The victim died at the scene.


CHP Officer Pete Mann told the Sacramento the victim was associated with the Vagos biker gang. Investigators were trying to gather information about the assailants and were asking witnesses to come forward.


Westbound lanes of the interstate were closed at the Nevada state line, causing traffic to back up for miles.


Five years ago this weekend, members of the Vagos and Hells Angels game exchanged gunfire during a deadly brawl on the floor of a casino in nearby Sparks.


Update, 9:50 p.m.
The CalTrans website reports that all traffic is being held at the state line. No explanation for the change from the 9:15 p.m. update is available.
The estimated time of clearing is now midnight.

The CalTrans website reports that passenger vehicles are being allowed past the Nevada State line on westbound I-80, but there is a detour at the Hirschdale exit.
“Big rigs and buses” are still being held at the state line.
The estimated time of clearing is 1 a.m.

California Highway Patrol-Truckee has reported I-80 westbound is closed at the Nevada state line in response to an apparent shooting.
At approximately 5:40 p.m., CHP -Truckee posted on Facebook that I-80 westbound was closed as officials investigate an apparent shooting on the highway.
According to the post, there is currently one fatality at the scene and it is unknown when the interstate will be reopened.


The CHP-Truckee post advises travelers leaving the Reno area to take US-50 westbound or Mount Rose Highway to State Route 28 westbound, then take SR-267 or SR-89 to get back onto I-80.

That's either a very bold shooting or a very stupid/risky shooting (since it's googles, I'll go with the latter).

That area is full of CHP:

I-80w, every vehicle is stopped at the agricultural station; every truck at the weight scales.

I-80e, the Overland Highway entrance is a very well known spot for CHP to always be hiding out trying to catch speeders.

Of all areas to not do a shooting, this would be a good example.
