A new report from the DOJ and Equal Opportunity Commission suggests police agencies could diversify by hiring non-US citizens, loosening up on background checks, and making the testing process to become a police officer a whole lot easier.
The Department of Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission released a report earlier this week about the impact of background checks police officer diversity. The report is meant to increase diversity in police departments across the United States.
Researchers found that things like criminal background checks can cause a disproportional impact on the hiring of racial minority applicants. The report also states that criminal background checks can impact minorities too because they are more likely to have had contact with police due to the communities that they live in.
Researchers also found that U.S. citizenship “may prevent a considerable number of racial and ethnic minorities – many of whom have valuable foreign language skills – from being hired by law enforcement agencies.”
The report states “Allowing work-authorized non-U.S. citizens to work in state and local law enforcement, particularly in jurisdictions with large immigrant populations, can enable agencies to more closely represent the diversity of their community,”.
To be completely honest, this is the biggest load of politically correct garbage that I have ever seen. Here’s the Cliff notes version of what the report suggests:
Hire people who aren’t U.S. citizens to be American police officers.
“Allowing work-authorized non-U.S. citizens to work in state and local law enforcement, particularly in jurisdictions with large immigrant populations, can enable agencies to more closely represent the diversity of their community,”
Hire weak people to be police officers.
“If these tests are administered in a manner that overemphasizes physical strength, fail to account for improvements that will result from training, or fail to account for inherent physiological differences between men and women, they may not be selecting for what is actually necessary on the job or is similarly required for the effective absorption of necessary law enforcement training, and consequently may screen out otherwise qualified women.”
Hire dumb, inarticulate people to be police officers. And let’s not actually pay attention to people’s “background.”
“Agencies frequently rely on written tests, oral interviews, physical tests, background checks, and other processes to screen applicants. These processes may violate the law if they disproportionately screen out applicants from protected classes and are not job-related and consistent with business necessity.”
Policing isn’t a business. Policing is a low-paying and extremely stressful life choice that police officer commit to in order to make their communities a better place. The men and women who proudly serve as police officers worked very hard to become police officers. At a time when police scrutiny is at an all time high, why would you want to lower the bar for non-American, dumb, weak people to be faced with what we all see on the news? You do realize that the weaker a person is, physically and mentally, the higher chance there will be of them shooting someone, correct?
Diversity is great for any profession, especially policing, but lowering the bar for certain groups or even just lowering the bar in general for everyone will only make policing worse, not better.
