This comes one week after Hillary Clinton suffered a stunning loss to Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Google, Facebook and Twitter announced changes this week.

Both Facebook and Google have announced that they are curbing the searchability of phony news across their platforms.

Google said they would stop fake and misleading websites from utilizing the company’s ad-selling software, stopping their revenue.

Twitter also announced Tuesday that it would update its “mute” function for users to hide content they do not want to see.

Now we have a rough idea who they are going to target…

I think they are shooting themselves in the foot by doing this since it just brings more attention to the Alt-Right and the Alt-Kike media (Infowars/Breitbart). Currently keep using what you normally do, but be prepared to have some more sock accounts if you get banned or whatever.

There's new alternatives to all of these websites already, but they are completely populated by the Alt-Right, so they are echo chambers currently, but slowly growing. The Alt-Right has grown exponentially over the past couple years, and especially the last few months since Hillary Clinton mentioned it. 4Chan's traffic is has gone up by multiples higher than it has ever been.

Just understand the cat is out of the bag, and these people think they can cover shit up. The Internet never forgets, and all they are doing is the Streisand Effect (https://encyclopediadramatica.se/Streisand_effect) on the Alt-Right, which is causing it to grow faster.

The ADL found that 2.6 million anti-Semitic tweets — with an estimated reach of 10 billion impressions on Twitter — were posted on the popular social media platform between August 2015 and July 2016.


Within this group of tweets, the task force focused on 19,253 — though the ADL says the actual number could be much higher — directed at 800 journalists. Two-thirds of these tweets came from 1,600 Twitter accounts.

The top 10 most targeted journalists — all Jewish — received 83 percent of those 19,253 tweets. Among them: The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, The New York Times’ Jonathan Weisman, and CNN’s Sally Kohn and Jake Tapper.

Yair Rosenberg, a writer for Tablet magazine — which covers Jewish news and culture — also made the top 10 list, and praised the ADL report for bringing attention to the wave of anti-Semitism targeting Jewish journalists.

“I was getting this stuff before the election. Obviously, it’s intensified,” Rosenberg said. “There’s a bunch of very vocal, alt-right, nationalist, Neo-Nazi — whatever definition you prefer — that goes particularly berzerk when Jews criticize Donald Trump.”

Some tweets are viciously and threateningly anti-Semitic. Rosenberg sometimes responds to less violent ones with humor, as he did when one Twitter user repeated the common anti-Semitic trope that Jews control the media.

Over this noted rise in anti-Semitism on Twitter, and attacks on Jewish journalists in particular, the ADL in June formed its Task Force on Harassment and Journalism, which included journalists, deans of well-respected journalism schools, and experts on hate speech.

The task force’s report found the 1,600 offending Twitter users often identified themselves as white, supporters of Trump, conservative, and the alt-right — far right-wingers, some of whom are white supremacists. The task force emphasized that it is not implying that Trump or his campaign endorsed tweets from these accounts. “Only that certain self-styled supporters sent these ugly messages.”

But Trump and his campaign have done little to dissuade his followers from such behavior, and Trump himself has been accused of trafficking in anti-Semitic tropes.

Among the most well-publicized examples of an online onslaught against a Jewish journalist were the death threats and torrent of anti-Semitic abuse on Twitter that Julia Ioffe received from Trump supporters, after she published a profile of his wife in Vanity Fair in April. One superimposed Ioffe’s head on the uniform of a concentration camp inmate.

Melania Trump said the tweets against Ioffe were wrong, but she also blamed the journalist, saying that she had “provoked” Trump supporters.

Donald Trump at the time said he didn’t know much about the incident, and that reporters should speak to the people who wrote the tweets.

Rosenberg said the online harassment does not make him scared, because he considers perpetrators “pathetic,” and on the fringes of society. Trump is “last gasp.”

“But if Trump wins,” Rosenberg added, “all bets are off.”

Greenblatt said he fears that the attacks on Jewish journalists could have a chilling effect on journalism and free speech in general. He called on Twitter to better police itself.

He notes that the ADL and Twitter have worked together on the issue, and that Twitter deleted 21 percent of the most problematic accounts. “The challenge is they didn’t suspend the other 79 percent,” Greenblatt added.

According to the New York Times, Twitter responded to the ADL report with a statement saying that the company’s policy prohibits anti-Semitic content, and that it has plans to introduce new policies and tools to make users feel safe.

The Times also referred to a statement from Trump campaign spokeswoman Hope Hicks on the ADL’s findings: “We have no knowledge of this activity and strongly condemn any commentary that is anti-Semitic,” adding, “We totally disavow hateful rhetoric online or otherwise.”

Anti-Semitism has been rising in Europe — both from the right and the left — in past years with the ascent of right-wing parties, and an increasing animus toward Israel that often expresses itself as anti-Semitism against European Jews. Last week, a multiparty British Parliamentary committee lambasted the leftist Labour Party for its tolerance of anti-Semitism within its ranks, and also singled out Twitter as a means by which anti-Semitism is spreading.

Jews have long felt safer in the U.S., where they are at the top of the list of most admired religious groups. My family's genealogical society is located in MA. They helped me trace my family line in the US to 1637 and then a few generations before that in England. This was not an easy task; I was very grateful for their help. Anyway, they had a few projects they needed volunteers for. Most of it was just tedious file renaming and organizing work. I worked on these projects for years all the while proudly paying my membership dues. Well, every month they mail out a newsletter and send a few emails. The content of these newsletters, IMO, should focus solely on genealogical issues pertinent to our ancestry. Sure, there was an occasional on-topic article, but most of the content of the newsletters was far leftist political propaganda. It was endless crap about equality, feminism, diversity, etc. One article, I'll never forget, was a review of Race, Ideology, and the Decline of Caribbean Marxism. WTF??!!! Another sample article: The Politics of Everybody: Feminism, Queer Theory, and Marxism at the Intersection. Everything they mailed me had a "rainbow pride" stamp or "equality for all" stamp on it. After years of receiving this crap from them, I finally said enough, stopped paying my membership dues, stopped helping volunteer, shredded all the newsletters they sent me, and just said I'm done. F THIS. I wanted to focus on our genealogy and nothing else. I don't want leftist political propaganda from my family's genealogical headquarters! It really sucks because it was fascinating searching their database, helping other people, and finding out all sorts of interesting things about various families. But, it was just too much to put up with. Done!

(CNN) — When we use the term "fake news" (https://archive.is/o/jsNg2/money.cnn.com/2017/11/03/media/claire-wardle-fake-news-reliable-sources-podcast/index.html)it is not only self-defeating, it oversimplifies a very complex problem.


A year ago, this wasn't the case. The term actually meant something. It described a particular type of website that used the same design templates as professional news websites but its contents were entirely fabricated.

But earlier this year, the term started to become meaningless.

It became used to describe any piece of information that someone else didn't like. Increasingly the term has become weaponized by politicians who use it to undermine independent journalism in an effort to reach the public directly through their own channels.

This is not just a US phenomenon. Research by the Columbia Journalism Review (https://archive.is/o/jsNg2/https://www.cjr.org/analysis/fake-news-study.php) shows that people in three other countries increasingly believe that the "mainstream" media peddle fabricated stories.

In countries where a free press is a luxury and free speech is not guaranteed, this phrase is being used as an excuse to clamp down on both. Terminology matters, and using it simply "because everyone else uses it" is no longer good enough.


The term is also woefully inadequate for describing the complexity of the situation. When we think about the Facebook posts created by Russian accounts during the US election, would we consider them news? What about the image of a shark (https://archive.is/o/jsNg2/https://twitter.com/jeggit/status/902048241646280704?lang=en) swimming up a Texas highway during Hurricane Harvey? That shark was real (https://archive.is/o/jsNg2/www.whitesharktrust.org/pages/mediaarticle/media25.html), but it was not in Houston during that hurricane.

We live in a time when our information streams are polluted and there are many different types of information. They move and shift. Some types are visible; others are harder to spot. Some we would all agree are problematic -- manipulated images created during a breaking news event, for example, designed to confuse and to hoax. But what about satirical news websites? What about misleading headlines designed solely to drive traffic?





We need to rethink our vocabulary.

In our recent report, "Information Disorder (https://archive.is/o/jsNg2/https://shorensteincenter.org/information-disorder-framework-for-research-and-policymaking/)," commissioned by the Council of Europe and published by Harvard's Shorenstein Center, we proposed three different terms as a way to think and talk about this issue.






Misinformation is when there is an unintentional mistake, such as the poor use of statistics or quotes, or when an old image resurfaces (for example when people shared the shark photo mentioned above).
Disinformation is when false or manipulated information or imagery is deliberately used to do harm to someone. (The Facebook ads created by Russia and targeted at US voters during the presidential election would be an example of this).

Malinformation is when genuine information is used to cause harm to someone (for example revenge porn).





Rumors, conspiracy theories and fabricated information are nothing new. As Sun Tzu explained 25 centuries ago, "all warfare is based on deception." False information is a part of our lives, whether it is individuals lying to save face or prevent hurt feelings, politicians making unrealistic promises during election campaigns, corporations using false claims to damage their competitors or the media disseminating misleading stories to gain a wider audience.

However, social media has added an entirely new dimension to the phenomenon, most significantly because the power dynamics have changed. Now anyone in the world can easily create and disseminate false information, and with the help of bots, organized groups, or targeted ads, it is easy to amplify it.
Given how social media have made our information consumption a public performance for our audience, it is now even less likely for most people to swim against the tide and challenge each other. In our increasingly lonely lives, who would want to feel lonelier?






Recent revelations about foreign meddling in the US elections have exposed the fact that we're targets in an active information war. Previously these types of campaigns were fought via sophisticated and expensive communication technologies, such as short-wave radio or transnational satellite television.
Now significantly less powerful agents can harm large institutions or established individuals with few resources. It is asymmetrical warfare.





There are two new and unique aspects of social media which have changed the game: Firstly, disinformation can be cheaply amplified through committed volunteers, paid agents or bots. Secondly, our information sources are becoming increasingly social, and therefore much more visual, emotional, and performative. And as trust in institutions decreases, people are turning to their closest networks of family and friends for information.

This has created a perfect environment for the spread of disinformation around the world.

There are significant and long-term concerns. Social media has become the most powerful vehicle for politicians around the world to undermine traditional media, thereby damaging the very foundation of the idea of representative democracy: informed voters.








The combination of social media and television is a hotbed for sensational politicians who benefit from populations polarized by political, economic, religious, racial or ethnic divisions.

Sophisticated methods -- especially the use of micro-targeted advertising via social media -- must be considered as a recipe for electoral success around the world.

So what can be done? The truth is that there are no easy solutions. These trends are the symptoms of significant social and economic shifts globally. But ultimately, it is only logic and critical thinking which could save us from the trap of manipulation.





Research shows (https://archive.is/o/jsNg2/foreignpolicy.com/2017/03/01/why-is-finland-able-to-fend-off-putins-information-war/) the more educated people are, the less likely they are to be affected by information warfare. Technologists, policy-makers, and researchers are working hard to find short-term solutions. However, none of these will have a long-term effect if we don't overhaul public education, especially regarding information literacy.
