DETROIT (WJBK) - A judge has ordered a recount of Michigan's presidential results to begin by noon Monday.

The 4.8 million votes that were cast here in Michigan for the presidential election will be recounted by hand. The deadline for the recount to be completed is December 13.

Judge Mark Goldsmith issued his ruling early Monday that rejected an effort by Michigan state officials to wait two business days before starting to hand-count ballots. The move increases the chances that the state could complete the count ahead of a Dec. 13 deadline

Green Party candidate Jill Stein's lawyers argued that waiting until Wednesday to begin the recount would cut it too close.

The judge held a 3-hour hearing on Sunday in federal court as a result of the emergency request put in by Stein to expedite the recount. It's rare for a judge to hold a hearing on the weekend.

"This is not about Donald Trump; it's not about Hillary Clinton; it's not about my campaign; it's not about Gary Johnson. This is about the American voters who deserve to have a voting system we can trust," Stein says.

She doesn't believe recount efforts will change the results of the election, but that the recount is more about upholding the integrity of the election as well as the voting process as a whole.

This is a developing story. Stay with FOX 2 for updates on the recount efforts.

Stein is trying to force recounts in three states. The Green Party is trying to force a federal court order for a statewide recount in Pennsylvania, and the count is already underway in Wisconsin. In Nevada, a partial recount of the race was requested by independent presidential candidate Roque De La Fuente.

These are all battleground states in which Trump narrowly beat opponent Hillary Clinton.

Trump's victory in Michigan was not officially called until November 28, nearly four weeks after the election. The Board of State Canvassers said Trump won by 10,704 votes -- which is two-tenths of a percentage point. They say it's the closest presidential race in Michigan in more than 75 years.

Trump's win in Michigan gives the Republican 306 electoral votes to Democrat Hillary Clinton's 232.
Trump is the first Republican presidential nominee to win Michigan since 1988.

This would make a great State government jobs program for the unemployed. Permanent vote counters and a slew of administrators in every precinct to manage them all.
Why ever stop?

I signed up as a volunteer in Oakland county. Did the training today and will be there Wednesday to ensure all votes cast for Trump are counted.

Michigan does not get any Electoral College votes if they miss the deadline.
