Ducting is definitely a thing. in the right conditions you can hear something a long way away. How far I can't say but my experience would be something might be audible for a half dozen to 10 miles further than in regular conditions. In radio waves it can be many 10s of miles in Ultra High Frequencies. My experience would be as many as 100 miles. in HF bands it can be many many more than that. 1000's of miles+.

Perhaps it is the sounding of the Tump-Pence.

This was covered here years before you were born. Don't feel like searching though. I remember something about FBI and CIA infighting, seems like a probable scenerio at this time too.

Likely caused by geoengineering electromagnetic energy directed at the ionosphere. It could be a natural phenomenon, as well, geomagnetic in nature, but not that likely since I'm not aware of reports such things happening prior to 10 years ago or so.

I do not dismiss the idea that these phenomena were something St. John witnessed, and wrote about nearly 2000 years ago. He couldn't understand exactly what they were, and called them "trumpets."

seems like the Electric Theory has an explanation for the noises. Though very plausible, I wonder why those noises have only been reported over the last 3-5 years.
