Secretary of State John Kerry’s address following a UN Security Council resolution vote declaring Israeli settlements illegal could have seemed unremarkably pedestrian if it weren’t for the twilight zone which Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has created in the resolution’s wake. Bent on punishing the world for the audacity of voting against the Zionist settlement campaign, he has created a bizarre aura around the entire situation, leading most to ask: what world is he living in? Like an overindulged child shocked into a fit of rage at having his parents suddenly not acquiesce to his demands, Mr. Netanyahu’s attitude can be summed up best by a brief excerpt from Mr. Kerry’s Wednesday speech:

“Regrettably, some seem to believe that the US friendship means the US must accept any policy, regardless of our own interests, our own positions, our own words, our own principles -- even after urging again and again that the policy must change. Friends need to tell each other the hard truths, and friendships require mutual respect. Israel’s permanent representative to the United Nations, who does not support a two-state solution, said after the vote last week: ‘It was to be expected that Israel’s greatest ally would act in accordance with the values that we share’ and veto this resolution.”

“The values that we (the US and “Israel”) share” are ostensibly that the United States must capitulate to any and all Israeli demands, especially when the future of the settlements are at stake. This attitude in and of itself is a sort of surrealist comedy, but the escalation of the current mudslinging, led by the current Grand Marshal of all Mudslingers, Benjamin Netanyahu, has long past the threshold leading away from the humorous and into the frightening. When the Israeli Prime Minister told New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Murray McCully, that “If you continue to promote this resolution from our point of view it will be a declaration of war” one could be forgiven for not only questioning Mr. Netanyahu’s sanity but their own. The statement seems too far fetched to have actually been uttered in the real world so it must be that the hearer’s mental lucidity is in question.

The Israeli government’s predicament could be compared to that of a beleaguered husband hounded by, in this case, a justifiably nagging wife. When he comes home he races under the table to hide from her and her verbal barbs. As the man of house tries to remain undetected, he mutters to himself “yes, but here under this table I’m the boss!” Forced into hiding under the table by the international community, “Israel” feels the need to lash out in all directions, including threatening sanctions on Senegal and the Ukraine, amongst others. Typically, Jews around the world could have thrown a look of contempt in the direction of the UN Israeli ambassador and gone about their business. The problem is that the madmen hiding under the table claim to speak in the name of Jews around the world. Sensing their impending downfall, Prime Minister Netanyahu and others have no compunction with dragging down the rest of Jewry with them in their rapidly sinking ship. After all, in their mind they represent the “Jewish State” which by default represents the entirety of the Jewish People, giving them the right to steer Jewish destiny in whatever direction they see fit. Once again, a snippet from John Kerry’s address can possibly shed some much needed light on the subject.

Secretary Kerry’s mistake is an innocent one. Even if there were to be two states, one Israeli and one Palestinian, “Israel” would only be left with one choice. To be democratic.
