For the past couple of months, I've had to drive through Oakland quite a bit. What shocked me, was all the tent cities, and homeless encampments I've been seeing. They look like shanty towns you'd see in 3rd world countries. There is a lot more than there's ever been before, in fact the homeless population has doubled in the past year, so they say in this article.
So, turns out the city is helping the homeless, not kicking them out. The homeless keep their area clean, the city picks up their trash, even drops off porta potties for them.
There's a very good video at this link. Newscaster Frank Somerville drove by one camp, got curious, and talked to the homeless there. What he found out, kicked off a news crew to do a full interview. I've actually met Frank in person several times, got to know him in the past. Frank is a very honorable, humble, compassionate person. Not what you'd think from the media.
So, I wanted to share this. Video at the link.
