View Full Version : Anger can be a sin.
Hitch

Something happened today, that caused me to reflect on this. I think anger can be a sin, even if it's directed appropriately. I think Jesus wants us to be the "bigger man" so to speak.
We will all face judgement. A lot of what we discuss, really isn't our battles to fight. Be the best person, God willing, you can be, and let some of these battles go.

Ephesians is a good letter on wrath & anger. These are real, normal emotions.
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. (Eph 4:25)
"Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice" (Eph 4:31)
"And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." (Eph. 6:4)

Motivation is the determining factor. Even "love" can be a sin.
I struggle with the failing of Peter all the time: wanting to forcefully correct things I cannot...or should not.

Bingo. OP is apparently attempting to sell us "love thy enemy" masochism and negate our natural instinctive fight or flight reaction to harm. Anger is a natural instantaneous survival response via Adrenalin.

Without knowing the actual details of Hitch's encounter that led him to believe his anger may have been sin, I can't comment too much further. It would also be important to know if the target of his anger was a brother.
As you know, controlling one's anger is not unique to the teachings of Christ. Buddha, likewise, in particular.
Is anger always a sin? Absolutely not.

Failure to act in the face of wrong is sin.
Anger for selfish reasons or without a just reason is the converse.

Propaganda alert!
The illustration is incorrect and is the result of Jewish editing of the bible. It was not the Romans, it was the Jews that killed Jesus.

Anger is an emotion. All emotions are chemical receptor cells getting turned on or turned off by chemical signals sent from the brain. I doubt if a chemical can be classed a sin.

This is simply not true. There's absolutely no anger in a fight or flight survival response. None. Anger in those situations comes afterwards, it's natural to be angry at the person trying to take your life, even if you won and they are dead. During the situation, there's no actual emotion. That's the beauty of adrenaline, it takes emotion out of the equation.
I'm talking about anger in non-survival situations, that can be a sin. I should have been more clear. When the actions of another don't threaten you, but offend you, and you stew on it and let that anger rise up. That, I think can be a sin.

I put that down first but decided imagination would be more inclusive.
I suppose I could have mentioned 'delusional' but that word might have elicited an emotion.

Oh. Like when you got angry in GSUS threads and literally threatened to kick my ass.
Insults are indeed actual injuries and demand/deserve an angry response. Why do you think insults are considered "fighting words"?

Your mistake in the past was forgetting where you were...on the internet...to the point that your Adrenalin kicked in as if in person in the real world.

In the Summa Theologiae, Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said Anger is "the name of a passion. A passion of the sensitive appetite is good in so far as it is regulated by reason, whereas it is evil if it set the order of reason aside." (2, 158, ad 2)

Most of the time I completely ignore the stupid (you). Until you respond to a topic I'm familiar with in your usual conspiracy bullshit.....I correct you.
My behavior is based on your response.....as in if you're going to respond like an idiot fool:

2. Show why I made a such a statement.
And 100% of the time after a few responses from me you react in your usual way....by never answering a damn question...you play stupid so I treat you for what you are....stupid!
