woman who died in the September 11 attacks, a text message from
a German courtroom on Friday marked the culmination of an
exhausting personal quest for justice.

A minute after the verdict, Dominic Puopolo Jr received the
news from his lawyer Christian Weise that Moroccan defendant
Mounir El Motassadeq had been convicted and sentenced to seven
years in jail for belonging to the Hamburg cell that planned
and led the suicide hijack attacks.
"Fantastic. I'm just very happy," Puopolo, 39, told Reuters
by telephone from Miami Beach.

"I'm overwhelmingly pleased, and I believe justice has been
served in a very complicated trial," he said after the
year-long case in which he took part as a co-plaintiff.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Puopolo's mother
Sonia Morales Puopolo, 61, was in first class seat 3J on
American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles, one row
behind two of the five hijackers who commandeered the plane at
or soon after 8:14 a.m.

At 8:46 a.m., all aboard died when lead suicide pilot
Mohamed Atta rammed the plane into the North Tower of New
York's World Trade Center.

Puopolo's father, Dominic senior, should have been on the
same flight but switched to a later one at the last moment
because of a business commitment.

Puopolo himself sat through months of hearings at
Motassadeq's trial, navigating his way with Weise's help
through stacks of documents and long hours of testimony in
which he personally cross-examined some witnesses -- a right
allowed, under German law, to relatives of victims of a crime.

It was often a harrowing experience.

"Are you able to conclude it would be akin to torture, what
happened to my mother?" he asked an FBI special agent who
testified in January, demanding that he recount in detail what
the passengers of the hijacked planes must have suffered.

Puopolo said at the time he was haunted by the thought his
mother had known she was condemned to die in the 32 minutes
between the hijack and the final impact.

Motassadeq is one of only six men worldwide to face trial
in connection with the attacks. He was convicted of belonging
to a terrorist group but cleared on a second charge of aiding
and abetting the murders of thousands of people.

The presiding judge said Motassadeq, although close friends
with three of the suicide pilots including Atta, had not known
in detail of their plans.

Puopolo said he was disappointed by the verdict on the
second charge and would consult his lawyers on whether to
appeal that part of the ruling.

For much of the past year, he had put on hold his job as a
self-employed computer consultant and moved temporarily to
Hamburg, running up large bills for lawyers, translators and
hotels.

In an emotional written submission to the court on Monday,
Puopolo said he would not attend the verdict in person because
of "sheer emotional exhaustion."
