Un masivo apagón ha afectado este jueves a la capital belga, Bruselas. Los residentes locales que se han quedado sin electricidad en el centro de la ciudad así como en sus suburbios, reportan en las redes sociales que las sirenas se escuchan por toda la ciudad.

A massive blackout has affected the Belgian capital Brussels this Thursday. The resident have been left without electricity in the center of the city, also the suburbs. The social networks are reporting sirens they hear sirens in all the city.

Brussels has been plunged into darkness after a massive power cut.
The loss of electricity across the Belgian capital has reportedly sparked terror attack fears, although the cause of the outage has not been confirmed.

Belgium and other European countries are on high alert following several devastating terrorist incidents over the past 12 months.

Brussels is home to a number of key EU bodies, including the European Commission and European Council, both of which are situated in the centre of the city.
The sounds of police sirens can be heard coming from the centre of the city in footage posted online by people tonight.

Belgian security personnel ares reinforcing main sites across Brussels as the blackout causes transport chaos.

The Molonbeek area of the city was the centre of an intensive anti-terror operation last year as cops hunted for Salah Abdeslam in connection with the Paris bombings.

Abdeslam was Europol's most wanted man following the Paris attacks and became the target of one of the largest manhunts in modern European history.He was finally seized in a police raid in the Molenbeek area of Brussels after four months on the run.

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the November 2015 Paris attacks which were the deadliest on France since World War II.

Power outage in northeast Brussels caused by technical incident

On Thursday, 9 February at 10:40 p.m. Elia's high-voltage substation
in Schaerbeek suffered a simultaneous loss of two grid components
which together supply multiple high-voltage substations in Brussels.
These high-voltage substations were subsequently left without
power, directly impacting residents of the Brussels districts of
Evere, Saint-Josse, Schaerbeek and, to a lesser extent, central
Brussels, Kraainem, Zaventem and Woluwe.

Our technical teams proceeded immediately to the site and found that a
localised explosion - caused by a technical incident - had damaged the
facilities.

After performing the appropriate safety inspections and isolating the
damaged components, Elia was able to re-energise the high-voltage
substations one by one starting at midnight. By around 1 a.m. all highvoltage
substations had been reconnected to the grid.

Last night, Elia personnel took all possible measures to re-energise the
high-voltage grid in the Brussels region as quickly as possible. Today the
situation is being monitored continuously in order to ensure the grid is fully
operational.

As usual, Elia will conduct a thorough analysis of the events in order to
ascertain the cause of the incident.
