I was in Berkley for a Detroit Diesel engine class shortly after that. The class was close to where the freeway collapsed.

Certainly not a small earthquake, but still not a huge one at M6.9...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Loma_Prieta_earthquake
The 1906 one was almost a magnitude worse estimated at M7.8...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_San_Francisco_earthquake
What was interesting to note was that the landslides were very limited in the 1989 earthquake according to my linked Wikipedia article, due to 4 years of drought. An earthquake like the one in 1906 happening today would be absolutely devastating in lives lost! And perhaps it isn't an impossibility either as a +M7 is predicted every 80-100 years approximately, and the one in -89 was not enough to dissipate sufficient amount of energy.
The day after calexit perhaps?

For effect. When Cali turns their back on God/Trump. Then he strikes thee back down... :)

I remember this quake. I was young, but I still remember it very well. When it was happening, it really felt like it went on forever. Funny how time can slow down like that. It started shaking and seemed to just get worse and worse without stopping.
We were fortunate, we lived in the east bay and the house had no damage, just things broken that fell off of shelves and such. My father at the time worked in San Francisco and took the bus back and forth to work. After the quake hit we just prayed for his safety. Thankfully, he had taken an earlier bus that day, and was out of the city when the quake hit.

I lived it. Despite the distance, we got good jolts in Stockton. We were in a store on Pacific Avenue, and the first wave hit. I grabbed my Mom and said, we're leaving. Then another one. The movies show people running during earthquakes. That's utter bullshit. Good luck trying to stand up during a wave let alone run. It stopped, and I asked me Dad for his car keys (he was across the store when it hit). I went out, and turned on KCBS (San Francisco). Dead air. Oh, shit, I knew right away what happened. Tried KFBK (Sacramento), and got initial news. KCBS was back on in a couple of minutes once the generators fired up.
A friend was in Hollister, near the epicenter. The effects were far more drastic there.

I lived in New England at the time and remember it well. We didn't feel a damn thing! :)
