Virginia Beach shooting suspects were looking for someone to kill, detective testified
VIRGINIA BEACH
A 19-year-old and his friend were driving around when they spotted a woman smoking a cigarette outside a two-story home.
“She’s the one,” Nicholas Cates said to his friend, Maurice Boney Jr.
Cates, who was driving an SUV, called out to the woman. He asked if he could borrow her lighter. As she walked toward them, Boney handed Cates a gun.
Cates took the lighter, lit his cigarette, and gave back the lighter.
“As Christine Bender was turning to walk away, Nicholas Cates shot her. Five to seven times,” said Kevin Fanelli, a police homicide detective who testified during a preliminary hearing for Boney on Friday.
The detective was asked to provide details of an interview he conducted with Boney on Dec. 15 shortly after the 19-year-old was arrested.
Cates and Boney are charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 4 death of Bender. The 60-year-old mother of three and grandmother of four lived in a cul-de-sac in Chimney Hill.
Her killing was part of a series of random shootings in several neighborhoods off Holland Road between Nov. 29 and Dec. 7. She was one of two people killed. Four others were wounded.
Cates and another friend, 17-year-old Angelo Worlds, are charged in several of the incidents, but Bender’s killing is the only one Boney is charged with taking part in.
Cates was one month shy of his 18th birthday when Bender was killed. He and Worlds, who turns 18 in March, were charged as juveniles and are scheduled for a certification hearing on March 28. If a judge decides that there is sufficient evidence to prosecute them, they will be tried as adults.
