Last Thursday, March 2, 2017. there was a several hour outage at several Texas and Oklahoma banks and credit unions.

Never heard anything about this until today but I am kind of out of the breaking news loop. Or maybe this is deliberately suppressed news even on the web.

What's going on?

Just a quick note to my ZH friends that the banking system has been down this afternoon since about 11:30am for many banks in Texas (possibly all?) and apparently Oklahoma, too.

I have confirmed this firsthand. Have any of you been affected?

For example, some banks and credit unions in Texas were giving hand-written receipts for deposits, and limiting cash withdrawals to $300! Other banks were not making wire transfers for Friday payrolls of corporate customers.

Here is one message I found on a Credit Union website...

Due to an internet outage, FCCU in-store locations will be closing at
6pm today. Normal business hours will resume Friday, March 3rd. Please
use Online Banking, Mobile Banking and ATMs

I am sure it is just a glitch, but maybe grab a screen cap or print a copy of your account balances tonight. You might also consider visiting your financial institution in the morning, and try a withdrawal, just to see what is really going on. If that doesn't go well, better top off the fuel tanks and raise the threat level.

Probably nothing to worry about. Although, there do seem to be a lot of these "internet" outages lately.

If you are worried and looking for something to do over the weekend, consider this inventory.

Just like the Barclays bank 'outage' last weekend, the polish bank a couple of weeks before and India before that - it's a coordinated hack

These limited-scale and short-duration outages are a blessing to those to whom they reach. They surely wake up a few more folks who finally realize the bank is not their friend.

One day, probably soon, the banks (and credit unions and all financial institutions) will simply shut down. Temporarily, probably, but permanently is not out of the question. Whatever cash you have under your immediate control will be "it." Tens or hundreds of millions who trust in Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and the like, as well as plastic cards, will be totally SOL. Need gas, food, or anything else? Cash only, sorry.

The folks who got $300 should count themselves lucky. My primary credit union limits withdrawals to $100 when their systems can't contact the "Federal" Reserve ACH servers and related.

Are these outages hacking and/or otherwise deliberate? Probably not. People seem to want to see a "conspiracy" in everything, and, that's understandable, because the real conspiracies are outright denied by "the authorities" and the other tools in the media (see Hanlon's Razor). But as man trusts more and more in himself, and his technological toys, more and more his hubris will be knocked down by Murphy's Law or God Himself. Back in 1983, the British made a counterpart to The Day After called "Threads." Even then, it was understood just how everything in the modern world is interconnected, and if the "threads" that bind modern society together are compromised, it comes crashing down atop us. Today, one does not need a nuclear war to tear those threads apart. General and specific stupidity will cause more and more troubles such as these, both because people at all levels of society refuse to integrate alternatives (backups) into their strategies, and, the ability and willingness of individuals to do things properly declines.
