I always butt heads with my brother when talking about Jackson with my Lefty brother. I think Jackson was courageous intelligent leader who fought the central bank and risked his life to do so. But I am part Cherokee and the trail of tears is a sore spot for us. Maybe it was not as tyrannical as it looked though. The Cherokees did pretty well in Oklahoma with their share of oil lease money and to my knowledge there were none of those ghetto/reservations in OKla. but not sure about that. The Cherokees were one of the five civilized tribes and they had their own homesteads and lands in Okla. My great grandfather was a scout for the US army in Georgia and he and his family departed for Okla in covered wagon BEFORE the trail of tears started, which he had inside info about and which he knew would be brutal. Maybe the Cherokees would not have fared well at all if they had not gone to Oklahoma territory.
