A married science teacher grinned from ear to ear as she posed for a mugshot after being arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.

Sarah Fowlkes, 27, has been suspended from her job at Lockhart High School in Texas and faces up to 20-years behind bars for the alleged crime.

Fowlkes, who has worked as a biology teacher at the school since October 2014, was booked into Caldwell County Jail on Monday, hours after celebrating her birthday with her husband.

Lockhart police had obtained an arrest warrant for Fowlkes who turned herself in.

The Houston Chronicle reported that a school administrator contacted the police about an inappropriate relationship between a student and a teacher on March 10.

Police say they found evidence of messages exchanged between her and the student.

'Their contact was of a sexual nature,' said police.

Police Chief Ernest Pedraza charged Fowlkes, with engaging in 'sexual contact with the intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of' the alleged victim, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Improper relationship between an educator and a student is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Detectives in Lockhart, which is about 30 miles from Austin, interviewed a 17-year-old student who admitted to having sexual contact with Fowlkes.

Lockhart Independent School District duly suspended Fowlkes - who has been married since 2013 - pending an appearance before the State Board for Educator Certification.

The biology teacher faces up to 20-years behind bars if convicted

School superintendent Susan Bohn said: 'Lockhart parents entrust their children to us every day, and it is something we do not take lightly.

'Student safety is the district's most important priority. As soon as we learned of the report, we acted swiftly to involve law enforcement and CPS to conduct a thorough investigation. The district does not and will not tolerate any improper communication or contact between a teacher and child.'

Local news reported that on her profile page on the school's website - which has since been deleted - Fowlkes wrote: 'I have very high expectations of myself as a teacher as well as of my students and I hope that this will be a formula for achievement.

'I want this to be an enjoyable year for all of my students but also a productive, challenging and encouraging year with success for everyone.'

Police in Lockhart said that this is the first time they have investigated a teacher for having an inappropriate relatinship with a student.

'Seventeen years old is obviously older but at the same time it doesn't make anything right,' said Detective Jesse Bell to KXAN.

'If the kid is in school, parents trust the school to take care of their kids so it's definitely not right — that a teacher in a position of power over a student be able to take advantage of a student.'

Your flippancy about this is disappointing. The Detective gets it right.

This is a matter of a moral sin, not a malum in se crime. The "boy" (sic) obviously engaged in it willingly. If we are to punish for fornication/adultery, then the "detective" needs to face the same charge.

I'm not saying we don't need to force a return to morality, but these efforts to destroy someone's life over something millions of others do is not right.

We're talking maginal paedo activity being normalized and moralized by people because they also want to bang the "teacher". Very poor form.

Don't worry, She'll get a slap on the wrist and be out so you'll all have an opportunity to try it on if you want. She might even be single again.

Perhaps she will become a movie star.

Oh the horrors she must have inflicted on that poor 17 your old. Sarc. She did him the biggest honor a woman could. She is an angel of mercy. This is nobody's business. Too bad she will probably go to jail.

Uh, no. This is not in any way "pedophilia." In fact, I take great issue with that, since claiming this is anything near "pedo behavior" trivializes real pedophilia.

Don't try to make this personal. I have a wife whom I love very much. I simply won't stand for hypocrisy and "assertion of 'authority'" where that "authority" has no moral authority.

She will lose her career, lose her family, get put in a cage for quite some time, and face a huge "sex tax" (fine). All for "abusing" a "child" (sic) that obviously had no problem willfully penetrating her. Should she lose her job and her marriage? Perhaps. The latter being a matter of whether her husband can forgive her.

No doubt she is an attractive woman. Why doesn't anyone ask the 17-year old "child" if he felt he was being abused while making out with his hot teacher?

Agree, it's only pedophilia if you submit to some bureaucrat's idea what the rules he decides should be.
I personally don't ascribe to any of their rules I don't believe are righteous. I don't care what or who made the law.

She should lose her license to teach, that's all. If the parents of the young male wish to press charges, they may. I find it hard to believe any parents in this case would want to ruin this woman's life over this. A possible 20 year sentence is ridiculous.
Whatever happens between the woman and her husband is their business.

Like it or not there is a double standard, always was, always will be. If the opposite happened, most parents would prosecute a male teacher to the full extent of the law. The board of education should not have a say in prosecuting this woman.

Back in the old days a youngster was considered an adult if he/she was able to support themselves by themselves. 100 year ago, if a teenager at 15 years of age was living by his own means and supporting himself through his own labor, he enjoyed all the benefits of adulthood. If a 20-something man was spoiled and still lived with parents, he was treated like a child. Nothing magical happens overnight between being 17 years and 364-days old and 18-years old the next day. The law only confuses the issue with such a strict labeling of what constitutes a child and what constitutes an adult.
