An academic study analyzed news coverage of missing children and found that only 20 percent of reported stories focused on missing Black children. This, despite the fact that Black children account for 33 percent of total missing children cases. In other words, missing Black youth are grossly underreported in the news. For missing girls, it’s even worse. When Black girls go missing, far too many people don’t know or don’t care.

Consistently, Black teen girls are disproportionately reported missing from their homes and communities, and when they go missing, the disparity in coverage compared to missing White teens is shameful. Black girls’ lives matter. Our girls deserve protection and support, but our society seems content to ignore them at best and dehumanize them at worst.

We see this regularly in Pittsburgh, where I live. When this happens, my organization posts the information on our social media networks using the hashtag #BlackGirlMissing. This community-driven effort is often what returns girls home safely to their family and community with minimal reporting from the media and limited support from the police in those critical first 48 hours.

The same disquieting trend was recently reported in Washington, D.C., with 10 Black and Latina teen girls who have gone missing in the past few months. In most cases, we don’t know whether these young women have run away from home, were abducted, subjected to violence, funneled into the sex industry — put simply, the proper alarm bells are not being rung, and not nearly enough is being done to ensure these girls are brought back to their homes and to safety.

This is a nationwide problem. As of 2014, 64,000 Black women were missing across the U.S. That’s a highly disproportionate rate within the total number of missing persons reports. You’d think we’d hear the stories of 64,000 missing women on the news — yet, we don’t.

There is a connection between the frequency with which Black women disappear and the cycle of criminalization and incarceration of Black women and girls. By ignoring or underreporting their stories, the media is failing these girls. But so is the criminal justice system.

The second an opportunity emerges to punish Black girls, legal authorities seize it and push Black girls out of school, into the criminal justice system as Dr. Monique W. Morris discusses in her book, Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools. We’re routinely punished for such everyday behaviors as driving our cars, standing on the sidewalk and browsing in stores; instead of showing us empathy and prioritizing alternatives to incarceration, authorities are quick to criminalize our behavior.

Look at Bresha Meadows in Ohio. After enduring years of physical harm from her abusive father, Bresha finally stood up to him in self-defense as he threatened to kill her mother and siblings. At the age of 14, Bresha saved her family members’ lives. But instead of finding trauma-aware, culturally competent care for her as a survivor of abuse, police incarcerated her in juvenile detention and charged her with aggravated murder. No matter the circumstances of Black girls’ lives, we are consistently disregarded and dehumanized by the media and by law enforcement.

The media and criminal justice system should respect, protect and trust Black women and girls — instead of unjustly persecuting us. The media and the criminal justice system should function as tools to support our girls, not as systems that repeatedly fail them. Demanding proper support from formal structures can start at the grassroots level: When we hear of a Black girl who has disappeared, use #BlackGirlMissing to amplify her story. Listening to Black women sometimes means interrogating why they’re not speaking, why their voice has gone silent.

I am great sympathy to the author's issue, La’Tasha D. Mayes of New Voices for Reproductive Justice.

I think though that the idea, as beautiful and good as it is, that the girls could be brought back to "their homes and safety" does not in many cases give the full picture. Often their is not a home, but a "flop house" with only an abusive, substance abusing mother and perhaps one of a succession of temporary subtance-abusing abusive males in residence.

Also, I would comment that there is no chance for the girls unless the boys are helped first. They need education, training and jobs and again that won't even help without a stable home and family life.

There must be males and females who want to have a nuclear intact home and family and they should only form community with others of similar ilk. Only chance for these young girls.

The drugs and alcohol purveyors must be put out of business.

Neuro toxins of lead and fluoride in municipal water must be stopped now.

Soros, all the neocons, the banksters and the traitors in congress and the Supremes must be somehow ruined and eliminated. The specific subject of this thread was that "missing black teens" and "black children", of all the "missing children", are being ignored and not-covered by the news media disproportionately.

These missing female "children's" obtaining of abortions is another matter not covered by any of the original posted articles in this thread.

By the way, to comment on the abortion - thread drift matter, If that amendment to Obamacare would have passed, federal monies given to Planned Parenthood would have stopped. That Ryan amendment/plan was really not much different than the original Obamacare plan, but in that respect of greatly stopping abortion availability, it was a huge change. So all those born again, abortion hating Republicans would not go along with this bill. Seems a very wide range of people and their ideologies very much like the murder of the unborn and want it to continue easily available and unimpeded.

WASHINGTON - D.C. officials are disputing reports of a recent increase in the number of people reported missing in the District. In a news conference on Thursday, Mayor Muriel Bowser said what has changed is the way authorities are getting the information out to the public, via social media.

FOX 5 DC has been covering the story since DC began to raise awareness about a staggering number of minors, and especially teenagers, who have been reported missing in the area. FOX 5 DC was also the first to sit down with Commander Chanel Dickerson, (http://www.fox5dc.com/news/dc-news/233676272-story) the newly appointed head of MPD's Youth and Family Services Division, which is tasked with getting to the bottom of each case.

“The number of missing persons reports has remained constant since 2014. What has changed is our way of getting that information out quickly and the tools that we are using to get that out,” Bowser said during Thursday's news conference.

“The overwhelming majority of our missing persons quickly return home or are located. So far in 2017, 95 percent of our cases have been closed. In 2016, we had almost 1,000 fewer reports of missing persons than we had in 2012,” Newsham said.

On Thursday, Dickerson said that since 2012, parents or guardians have reported almost 200 juveniles missing per month. Since the beginning of 2017, she said, that number has gone down to about 190 per month. She also said that from 2012 to 2016, over 99 percent of all missing persons cases have been closed. So far in 2017, there have been 708 missing persons reports filed at Metropolitan Police Department, of which 674 have been closed, and 34 remain open.

Since taking over the missing persons unit in December 2016, Commander Dickerson said she has made it her priority to give the same level of attention to each and every case. The department has turned to social media, including Facebook and Periscope, to increase the amount of exposure the cases are receiving, in conjunction with press releases.

Since the social media effort has launched, officials say they have received numerous calls from hospital staff, security officers and other D.C. government agency employees who have recognized missing people while at work.
