Well I must say that I just got hired part-time by a small but fast expanding butterfly farm ;D the pay isnt that great but it is a start. Wont fantasize too much in this economic environment but gosh, I wont be worrying too much daily about helping evil prosper.

As the world isnt ready to go money free just yet, for me it is a good deal as no insect is tortured/killed.

A single butterfly can cost anywhere from 75 cents to $7 on the wholesale market, depending on the time of year and species.

as much as I dislike the monetization of Nature, thats one of the best spots out there in this time and age.

============== TO GIVE AN IDEA

The Euchee Butterfly Farm raises about 20,000 butterflies a year, but that's still not enough to keep up with demand. So it imports another 20,000, mostly from Costa Rica, to make up the difference. http://www.nativebutterflies.org/

Why are you worried about pay? If you love what you do, you should do it for free, right? Or is this a dose of economic reality setting in, that now you understand you should be paid for the work you do?

that is why I chose that job... I have said this countless times though, dont care so much about the 11 bucks per hour right now but limiting my impact on society as much as possible, care about the Whole, which has nothing to do with communism but awareness. No money can buy passion, really

sorry, monetizing nature will end very bad, wont change my mind about it, but more environment friendly than that is hard to find

Luke 10:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house.

I'm sorry, what happens to the butterflies? You're not sticking pins in them are you?

Do they give you a net?

This is not an MK Ultra gig is it?

We have those monarch butterflies here and there is a particular tree they are attracted to. Can't recall the trees name but have had one in the yard before. It's like catnip for monarchs. They swarm all over it. Get tree, wait for it to flower and throw a net over it when the butterflies rock up.

hmmm I didn't know this was a thing.

But on the subject of butterflies. If anyone is visiting Singapore be sure and visit the butterfly park enclosure place. Not sure what it's called but it's worth going to. I think it's on the Sentosa island. There is one at the airport but the island is better.... in many ways including the chairlift ride across. If it's great weather take bathers.

Streets... I like this one

I was thinking of this just this morning. How a mans mouth betrays him but unfortunately so many listening do no hear.

go to the butter farm link in the OP... while I am sure some species are sought for collectors and pinned, nope the farm that hired me is for habitat preservation, working with zoos and wedding event planners. private and city gardens... not sure yet what place butterflies have in the ecosystem but will know a lot more in 2 weeks or so. the business also sells on farmers market gardens items for butterflies as another income.

EDIT:
just a quick search, well I didnt know and tnx for asking, they are as important as bees

How the Butterfly Can Shape an Ecosystem and Why We Need to Protect Them.... They act as a pollinator and as a food source for other species, acting as an important connector in a thriving ecosystem web.................
Providing Food for Other Animals Butterflies also act as a lower member of the food chain. They are a hearty meal for a number of animals, including birds and mice. As populations of butterfly diminish, so will populations of birds and other animals that rely on them as a food source. This loss of the butterfly is the beginning of the “butterfly effect.” It will continue to affect the entire ecosystem, working its way up the trophic levels. Nearly two-thirds of all invertebrates can be connected back to the butterfly on the food chain. The loss of this seemingly insignificant insect could, potentially, collapse entire ecosystems that rely so heavily on them. http://www.onegreenplanet.org/environment/how-the-butterfly-can-shape-an-ecosystem-and-why-we-need-to-protect-them/

thanks for sharing but this is still a small business with a gazillion of local opportunities and the farm that hired me is concerned about butterflies health and want them to stay healthy. They do not freeze them before an event, nor work with shipment services.

Your link is the evidence that LARGE SCALE business are the real danger. What happens when monetizing nature, the sky is NOT the limit. There is NO need to ship butterflies, such practices are the result of business willing to take over the market fast. This money making competition is a scourge. And this is why I am going to start an organization exposing this extreme reality. That is why we must go money-free

what the article didnt say is that with the bee-apocalypse, more butterflies are needed now.

>>>>>>Monarch butterflies, in particular, are suffering from these threats. These orange and black colored beauties were once common, but now, their population has fallen by 90 percent. The World Wildlife Fund and other organizations have come together and determined that the loss of the milkweed plant this species feeds on is the reason for the drastic decline in numbers. Interestingly, the expansion of genetically modified crops across North America has been linked to the decimation of milkweed..... Like bees, butterflies populations can also be harmed by pesticides.<<<<<<

Don't know about your operation but the butterfly operations around here release many butterfly species that are a risk to help maintain the populations.
Historical note, butterflies were originally called flutterbys.

the big income from event planning (wedding, funerals, etc)... but as much as I dislike it, counties are also buyers for the reason your stipulate. butterflies do not sting, unlike bees.

How do the butterflies imported from Costa Rica fare after being released? How do they affect the local ecosystem? Do they carry viruses, that local butterflies don't have defense against? How are they transported to Florida from Costa Rica?

have no idea and will learn how things are being handled internationally, was talking only of the small scale business that hired me and only delivers locally (less than 100mi radius)

by all species should remain indigenous to start with. IMHO, unless it is found out that they migrate spontaneously

who knows, maybe in a year from now I will be defending the trafficked butterflies. ;D

That's all well and good, but how do they taste?

It depends which butterfly you choose, remember though that more expensive doesn’t always mean more tasty/meaty, many people buy their butterflies for more esthetic reasons (imagine that! ;D), which may make a butterfly more expensive. And then it may depend on how you prepare them. Lemon butterfly is best raw on fish or to brew tea from. Nettle butterfly is best as soup, and is definitely not recommended raw as you get a rash from it. Some butterflies are better deep fried with some sea salt and LSD sprinkled on them. Tastes like potato chips, but definitively a groovier experience. But I am sure Goldie can help you more in this, she’s the pro! I think she wrote a butterfly cookbook, but she refused to share it with the membership here after Book accused her of insecticide.
