Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency Thursday night after fire officials extinguished a massive fire on I-85 in Atlanta that led to the collapse of a bridge on the crowded interstate.

The bridge on I-85 northbound just south of Ga. 400 near Piedmont Road collapsed about 7 p.m., Atlanta fire spokesman Sgt. Cortez Stafford confirmed.

No injuries to motorists or first responders were reported.

Officials said they still don't know how long it will take to fix the bridge, but they agree there is no underestimating the headache that awaits commuters.

"The cork is in the bottle" Department of Public Safety Director Mark McDonough said. "It couldn't have happened at a worse time."

Drivers coming southbound into Atlanta on I-85 will get no further than Cheshire Bridge Road or they can hit the ramp back to I-85 North, McDonough said.

If you're driving north into the city on the connector, you'll have no choice but to take I-75 North at the point where the two interstates split.

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said the catastrophic incident significantly affected I-85 and the broader transportation network.

Mayor Kasim Reed said late Thursday he’d spoken with the FBI “and at this time there’s no evidence of terrorism.”

He said city officials will be working to assess the bridge throughout the night.

“This is as serious a transportation crisis as we could have. The governor has been leading and we have been acting on it,” Reed said. “Our primary concern, first and most important, is that no one has lost their life. And as we stand here right now, we think that’s the situation.”

Stafford said a cause of the fire can’t be determined at this time because inspectors can't get under the bridge due to structural concerns.

"The entire bridge is compromised," Stafford said. "Right now, it's still dangerous to go under there."

I have wanted to know who this man was since the beginning. Perhaps some journalist is out there who knows? Maybe someone with facial recognition links to our databases?

This "Harley Davidson" guy as I call him has been a mystery for quite a while.

It is quite obvious this guy is some kind of plant, but by who? FBI, CIA, CFR, or news media trying to make hype?

Perhaps he is employed by Silverstein. Can the We Are Change team help out?

"...come out of nowhere and just ream right into the side of the twin tower, exploding through the other side...and then I witnessed both towers collapse, one first then the second, mostly due to structural failure because the fire was just too intense".

I wonder what the condition of the bridge was before the fire? Was it in generally good shape, or was it old and in disrepair?

If you look at where it collapsed it looks like the steel was cut prior to this event. Very clean section gone, nothing looks bent or crumbling. JMO since I can't see anything close-up.

Which is why I asked the question to the condition of the bridge before the fire. Only inept government management by an inept "mayor" would allow the city infrastructure to collapse. Detroit is all we need as an example to see what happens to city infrastructure when run by the inept and inferior race. If such roads were managed by white folks and such a collapse happened, you know we'd be hearing non-stop about the failure of whitey to maintain the city roads. When will people realize this is what they get when they elect a bunch of porch monkeys to run their cities?

GDOT is responsible for Interstate highway maintenance, but I really want to know more about the fire itself, which would, indeed, reflect on Apelanta's "government." How did it start, why did it start, and why was it allowed to burn for long enough to bring down such a structure?

The DOT also provided more details Friday about where the fire started, although the cause is still unknown. The fire started along a state right of way used to store construction materials and supplies.

“We are as eager to learn the cause of this fire as anyone, which is why we will continue to work closely and in full cooperation with fire investigators to determine exactly how the fire was started,” McMurry said.

for anyone who doesn't know the harley davidson guy is a NYC radio shock jock.

But it's what I thought of too when I head that. there some numbers on this one to tribute superbowl.

But anyway, its a good idea to leave piles of material under the bridge so it can be set on fire.

Three people were arrested Friday in connection with a raging fire that caused part of Interstate 85 in Atlanta to collapse, shutting down one of the busiest stretches of roadway in America, the state fire marshal's office said.

Authorities believe the three are homeless and were at the scene when the fire broke out Thursday, according to Glenn Allen, a spokesman for Georgia's Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.

Two of them — Sophia Bruner and Barry Thomas — were charged with criminal trespass, while a third — Basil Eleby — was charged with criminal damage to property, Allen said. Allen told NBC station WXIA in Atlanta Eleby is believed to have started the fire. Atlanta Fire Rescue said more charges could be added as the investigation progresses.

(...)

The massive fire was reported at 6:21 p.m. ET underneath the bridge on the northbound side — near where the interstate merges with another key artery, State Highway 400 — forcing authorities to close the interstate and turn drivers around during rush hour.

At about 7 p.m., the bridge gave way in a flaming heap that spewed thick, black smoke high into the air.

McMurry on Friday said the blaze started in an area used as a "storage location" for "surplus construction materials," such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) piping, a material commonly used in construction. Gov. Nathan Deal suggested Thursday night that the PVC may have ignited for some reason.

There ya go, a steady fuel source is required, other than office chairs at one level.
