“Cedric entered the classroom without saying anything, armed with a large caliber revolver, opened fire on his wife. She was killed in that exchange.” Burguan said. “There are two students in the classroom that were behind the teacher that were struck by gunfire.”
One of the wounded students, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, was pronounced dead at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
The police chief said the second injured student, a nine-year-old boy, was in stable condition. His name was not released.

Anderson had a criminal history, including domestic violence and weapons charges, according to police.

Anderson and Smith had only been married for a few months and were separated, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said at a press conference. Police have released few details about the gunman’s motive.

Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said Cedric Anderson had a criminal history, including arrests for domestic violence, weapons and drug charges. Burguan said he was not able to provide specifics about those cases. He said the criminal history preceded his relationship with Karen Smith.


It is also not clear if his criminal record would have prevented him from legally owning a gun.


Anderson was arrested in Los Angeles County in 2013 and charged with brandishing a weapon, assault and battery and disturbing the peace, court records show. The case was dismissed in 2014. Further details about the incident that led to the charges and why the case was not prosecuted were not immediately available.

He was also arrested in 1993 in Kern County, California, on charges of battery with serious bodily injury and battery on a person, but that case was also dismissed.
