In the comments the tank owner says there were too many witnesses to not call the authorities. Not sure what the ideal course of action woulda been in that situation.

Tell everyone you need to immediately take this ill gotten gold to the police. Quickly put it in your car and drive away, never to be seen again.
Stop at the bank, clear out your cash and leave everything else you own behind. Take the 1.5 million in gold and start a new life.
