The original Earth Day was March 21st, the Spring Equinox, endorsed by United Nations Secretary General U Thant.

A competing Earth Day was held on the 100th Anniversary of "Lenin's" birth, April 22nd, 1970. The second one stuck, for obvious reasons.

The green-outside-crimson-inside types insist "there is no connection," but you can be damn sure they'd be shrieking if someone had "coincidentally" proposed a holiday on April 20, 1989.
