BREAKING NEWS: Israel Hits Syria April 21, 2017 By Calvin Freiburger (http://thefederalistpapers.org/author/cfreiburger) 2 Comments (http://thefederalistpapers.org/us/breaking-news-israel-hits-syria#comments)
The Israeli Defense Force has struck back against targets in Syria following rockets from Syria hitting land in the open Golan Heights territory today.
No resulting injuries or damage was reported, and Israel is not believed to have been targeted, but Israel determined that a response was necessary to send a message against the Syrian civil war spilling over into the Jewish democracy’s territory.
The Jerusalem Post has more (http://www.jpost.com/Arab-Israeli-Conflict/Red-Alert-Siren-activated-on-the-Golan-Heights-488600):
According to initial estimates, the projectiles were thought to have been errant fire from fighting in the civil war across the border in Syria.
The rocket alert siren was activated in several settlements on the Golan Heights.
The incident came after the army reported that a mortar fell on the northern Golan Heights on Friday afternoon.
The spokesperson said that “The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to damage the State of Israel’s sovereignty and the security of it’s residents and sees the Syrian regime responsible for anything that occurs on its territory.”
This is not the first time Israel has struck targets in Syria under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the shared border between the two nations makes Syrian instability a constant threat to Israel.
Although no Israelis were harmed this time, Haaretz notes (http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.784887) that past incidents of spillover from Syria struck a teenage girl and came close to hitting IDF soldiers.
TFPP will continue to monitor the situation in Syria.
