Last week, hundreds of students boycotted classes at the Lutheran liberal arts college in southern Minnesota, packing a campus administration building.

Demonstrations erupted after a black student found an anonymous note that contained a racial slur on her windshield. The note reportedly told the recipient to "shut up or I will shut you up."

"We've confirmed that the note was not a genuine threat," President David Anderson wrote to students in an email after identifying the person of interest.

Due to privacy laws, Anderson says he cannot reveal who wrote the note.

Republican Rep. Lynn Greer, of Rogersville, forwarded a constituent email to dozens of legislators and lobbyists that described an experiment in which caged monkeys will eventually stop reaching for a dangling banana as they slowly accept the status quo because their predecessors were punished.

Greer apologized and said the email was meant to be a joke about the need to replace incumbents. However, black lawmakers said its intent was clearly racial. The bubbling tensions threatened to derail the final days of the legislative session.

"We have been subjected to the most racial insult that I've ever seen," House Black Caucus Chairman John Knight said of Greer's email. "There is no place in the statehouse. It is insulting and it is unacceptable."

Greer issued a statement apologizing for the email and met with the black lawmakers to apologize in person. He said he didn't see the email as racist.

"Bottom of my heart I didn't mean anything bad," Greer told The Associated Press. Greer said he now understood, with the backdrop of the race-tinged redistricting fight, how it was perceived. "If I thought about all that. I guarantee you I wouldn't have done that."

The email titled "POLITICS Psychology" describes how monkeys are sprayed with water for reaching for a banana. Some black lawmakers on Wednesday night said the imagery drew comparisons to how civil rights protesters in Birmingham were sprayed with fire hoses.

"My father was one of five boys and those five boys were some of the ones who got sprayed in Birmingham. Your email brought back a lot of emotions for the people who fought for the rights of all people," Rep. Rolanda Hollis, D-Birmingham, told Greer during debate on an unrelated bill.

A student group at the University of New Hampshire is demanding that officials at the taxpayer-funded school forcibly prevent white students from wearing sombreros and ponchos because white students wore the Mexican-themed garb on Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday

The group is also demanding that stores in the surrounding town stop selling “items like ponchos and sombreros.”

The student group, which calls itself “All Eyes on UNH,” alleges that white students participate in the “the normalization of racist behavior” when they dress in Mexican-style attire, according to a document unearthed by Campus Reform.

The 444-word set of demands by “All Eyes on UNH,” which alleges to speak for all students on campus, is entitled “University of New Hampshire Community Addresses Cultural Appropriation on Campus.”

Several white students apparently donned garb celebrating Mexican culture on Cinco de Mayo.

A University of New Hampshire student, Danique Montique, approached a white student on Cinco de Mayo because he was wearing a red, yellow and black blanket-like shawl with white fringe at the bottom.

Montique, who is black, then loudly bawled out the poncho-wearing student.

“It’s not your holiday, sir!” she scolds. “That’s stuff for you white people to figure out or fuckin’ know,” she also declares.

“I was utterly disgusted with students who chose to demean and appropriate Mexican culture,” she wrote in text accompanying her Facebook video. “I walked on campus miserable as if I didn’t belong. As a black woman, I was forced to become the very thing society deemed me to be; angry.”

The “All Eyes on UNH” document complains “that most students at UNH do not understand the importance of cultural literacy and how cultural appropriation contributes to the growing acceptance of racism and xenophobia.” Also, several “people on campus were uncomfortable and infuriated” about the sombreros and ponchos.

The document — claiming to speak for “UNH students” — makes four demands.

First, the University of New Hampshire administration must publicly condemn white students for dressing in sombreros and ponchos, and must organize “a campus-wide committee to prevent similar offenses in future years.”

Second, officials at the public school as well as “town elected officials” must “call on local stores in Durham to stop carrying items like ponchos and sombreros for May 5th celebrations, and instead seek out alternatives sources of revenue.”

Third, fraternities and sororities “and other party culture leaders” must “encourage their communities to address the normalization of cultural appropriation and take action to condemn the behavior and find other ways to celebrate the end of the academic year.”

The University of New Hampshire is most famous, of course, for issuing a (now-unavailable) “Bias-Free Language Guide” which identifies the word “American” as a “problematic” term which should not be used. As residents, we worked like dogs and slavishly obeyed the attending physicians - it was just understood - respect. One day, this diener decided to take a nap during his break and returned to the work station 20 minutes. The Chief attending physician walks over the diener and I and begins to firmly reprimand him for his lateness. The diener immediately starts mumbling something about racism and oppression and yada yada. I was absolutely petrified. The Chief instantly changes his affect and starts apologizing to the diener and makes nice and slowly fades away. I let what happened sink in and I turned to the diener, me being a blue collar kid from Brooklyn with not a clue about political correctness and said sarcastically with a tinge of anger: "You sonnabitch. What was all that crap about racism and descrimination. You were wrong and you know it. Are you serious?" He looked at me wide eyed for a few seconds...then broke into a wide smile and chuckled and said: "Sheeet, works every time. You know something, you're the first white man to call me out on it. All these lilly white docs piss their pants the minute you cry racism and descrimination." I pondered his remark for a moment and decided to say nothing further. He certainly got the message that I wasn't playing his game. Thus began my first hand introduction to the pernicious destruction of order and heirarchy in health care on the altar of political correctness and white guilt. True story.
