LOS ANGELES, California – UPDATE: Three LAPD Police Cadets have been arrested for stealing 3 police cruisers and crashing two of them. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck stated the cadets may have impersonated police officers in order to obtain possession of the cruisers.
The cadets used a LAPD sergeant’s information to gain access to police facilities where cruisers were at.
Chief Beck said that there are no LAPD weapons missing and they are currently conducting a full equipment inventory at this time.
Two males and one female juveniles were arrested after they crashed the cruisers. Because of their age, their names were not released in accordance with California laws.
Chief Beck stated that the third cruiser was stolen but not involved in the pursuit. The cadets have had extensive exposure to LAPD protocols and have inside information on how to access LAPD facilities.
The LAPD Cadet program is for young adults age 13-20 with no criminal history and high educational standards.
Chief Beck said that there has never been any similar incident with the cadet program but will be evaluating the security protocols and information cadets are given as they progress through this investigation.
