yes, don't mess with forest fires. They move quickly. You've got dry leaf and grass litter on the ground as well as the treetops burning. When the fire gets going it creates it's own wind which pushes it along faster.

I think Portugal has a lot of eucalyptus type trees as well if I'm not mistaken. Very oily leaves that burn intensely.

Been caught in 2 fires. One in a car with the fire jumping the road right behind us as we fled. Other one was a grass fire in a field. No trees, just grass. We hid out in a rocky hollow under a ledge. It went over us very quickly. Wasn't much fuel for it so it was not that intense but boy did it come at us quickly. Almost no time to think what to do. Sheer luck we found a place to hide.

Have had other "advenures" with fire. Got a lot of respect for fire.

I heard some vlogger say this fire was in the area of that famous "Virgin Mary sighting"; now the name escapes me, but apparently Pope just "canonized the event" very recently, past few weeks. Damn dinjoo-nuffins! :(
