1,700 tons of gold is not much in dollars, how much exactly, my guess around 70 billion dollars?

Andrew Carnegie sold his Steel Company to JP Morgan for $480 million in 1901 dollars. That is roughly 230 million ounces of gold.

Gold was money then, so Carnegie held hundreds of billions of dollars (today's dollars) in physical gold and paper gold after selling his company.
