PORTLAND, Ore. — A man was fatally shot by police Monday after seizing a helicopter at gunpoint near Portland, Oregon, the authorities said.

The man, who was not been identified, hopped a fence at Hillsboro Airport and then approached a flight instructor and a student who were inside a helicopter that was warming up, Hillsboro police Lt. Henry Reimann said.

The man ordered them to get out, firing at least one round during the encounter. The shot, and maybe a second misfire, were directed away from the victims, Reimann said.

The man got into the helicopter, but officers arrived before he could take off, Reimann said. "He jumps out the helicopter and starts running, runs across the street, and we engage him out in a field," he said.

The man died at the scene shortly before noon. No other injuries were reported.

Investigators have to yet to establish the man's motive for trying to steal the helicopter, Reimann said. The man did not reveal his plans to the flight instructor and student, he said.

A witness, Christopher Neal, told reporters that he and his family were watching planes at the small airport when he saw a man walking in wearing a gray hoodie. "He had his hands in his pockets, and for a moment I thought to myself that it was a little warm for the big, thick, gray hoodie with the hood over it," Neal said.

While finishing that thought, the man looked at them and then started running toward the fence. He pulled a gray mask over his face, Neal said.

The Hillsboro Airport, established in 1928, is one of three airports operated by the Port of Portland. It's about a 40-minute drive west of the Portland International Airport, the region's main airport.

The Hillsboro Aero Academy is the flight-training school at the airport. Its representatives did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Gray hoodie and a mask, I'm thinking he didn't plan on getting killed.

He should have took lessons on lifting cars in Chicago first.

FBI agent's stolen SUV found on West Side after getting parking ticket (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-fbi-agent-s-car-weapons-and-gear-stolen-in-chicago-s-west-loop-20170703-story.html)

An FBI-issued SUV stolen when an agent left it running at a gas station early Monday was found about 2 miles away later in the day, but investigators didn't immediately know if weapons stolen with it were inside, authorities said.

At 1 a.m., the FBI vehicle, a white 2014 Chevrolet Equinox containing several firearms and tactical gear such as a bulletproof vest, was stolen from a gas station in the 300 block of South Morgan Street, an FBI spokesman said in an email.

Later Monday, police were able to track down the SUV after a parking ticket was issued to it while it was parked in the 900 block of South Leavitt Street, about 2 miles from where it was stolen, police said.
Monday night, uniformed and plainclothes investigators huddled on Leavitt Street, where the SUV sat with a its gas cap undone and a parking ticket on the window — less than a half-mile away from the FBI Chicago Field Office, which could be seen from the scene.

Authorities hadn't searched inside the vehicle to see if any of the weapons were still inside. Instead, officers called for a tow truck to take it to be processed. Another vehicle was found earlier in the day with some of the gear inside, but not the handguns, an official said.

Bill Garcia, who lives on the block, read about the theft earlier in the day, because he works in the area where the vehicle was stolen. Later in the evening, as he was taking out the garbage, police swarmed the SUV parked in front of his home.

"I read about this earlier because I work in that area ... but I didn't know this was the vehicle," Garcia, 30, said while sitting on the porch of his home. "I guess if you're in the FBI, you probably shouldn't leave your car running at a gas station."

A surveillance camera at Garcia's home captured footage of someone ditching the vehicle around 11:30 a.m. Monday.

"You can see the car parked here and another one reverse down the street. The guys got out to wipe it down and they drove away."

In the video, before leaving, one man can be seen doing something in the back of the SUV. A grey sedan pulls away just after the man leaves the back of SUV and disappears from view.

The FBI was working with the Chicago Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, FBI officials said.

Anyone with information about the vehicle or its contents should contact the FBI or Chicago police.

An autopsy on Gorka was conducted Tuesday and the toxicology report will take up to 90 days. Investigators said Wednesday that initial findings didn’t indicate that Gorka had a history of mental health issues or substance abuse.

So far the investigation has found no connection between Gorka and the Hillsboro Aero Academy, according to police.

Police said Gorka had no current address. The name of the officer who shot Gorka will be released by police Thursday.

Investigators haven't been able to find a permanent address for Gorka

Gorka didn't have a pilot's license, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.

Cynthia Hudnall, Gorka's aunt, said he was a commercial truck driver who grew up in the Olympia area and recently got married while in The Philippines. She said she believed he lived somewhere in the eastern part of the United States.

A LinkedIn profile listed under Gorka's name describes him as a commercial driver based in Jacksonville, Florida, transporting freights "of all kinds" to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. He said he was looking to get back into transporting fuel and hoping to find a job somewhere in the South that offered more money, fewer working hours, paid vacation time and allowed him to be home every night.

"I am more than willing to relocate for a good opportunity and I am seeking a great opportunity oversees in combat zones supporting our troops and allies," the profile said. "I just need an opportunity to reach my goals i.e.. wedding, house and education."

The profile said Gorka has been working as a driver at Southern Refrigerated Transport since March. The company is based in Arkansas. A message left with a company representative wasn't immediately returned Wednesday.

Hillsboro helicopter suspect was ‘most loving’ person

'I really don't know what drove him to do this'

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Family and friends of the man shot to death after allegedly trying to steal a helicopter said they can’t believe it.

Gorka’s friends and family said it’s completely out of character for him.

According to Cody Countryman, Gorka’s best friend, Gorka never really got into any trouble. He didn’t drink or do drugs and he didn’t have a criminal record. Countryman also said Gorka was engaged.

Countryman said, “He had a rough time getting stable, but from me talking to him, sounded like things were working out for him. He was a trucker, seemed like he was enjoying it. He was making money. He was doing pretty good in life.”

Gorka also lived with Countryman for a few years. He ran away from home and was “kind of homeless,” so Countryman and his family took him in.

Hillsboro police said it appears Gorka lived in multiple cities across the country. Records show he was registered to vote in Olympia, Washington.

According to Countryman, Gorka had a difficult childhood and went from city to city after getting his GED.

Countryman also said he wasn’t aware of Gorka having any experience flying helicopters.

However, police said at the time of the attempted hijacking, it seemed like Gorka knew how to operate a helicopter.

Still wrapping his head around the incident, Countryman said he remembers Gorka as “a great person.”

“He’s one of the most loving and caring people I’ve ever met,” Countryman said. “He’d always be by your side no matter what. I really don’t know what drove him to do this.”

The aircraft was probably a Robinson R22. I wonder what he was thinking of doing with it. Hillsboro is a agri/farming town and attracts illegals giving it the affectionate nickname, "Hillsburrito."

That dude looks inbred also.
