A man who died Tuesday at the San Luis Pass has been identified.

Rufino Suarez, 26, of Houston, drowned around 6:30 p.m. on the north side of the pass.

Before he drowned, Suarez was on a kayak with six other people, Galveston Island Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis said. The kayak overturned, dumping all of them, including two children who were not wearing life-jackets, into the water.

Six of the people made it back to land safely. A 5-year-old boy who was on the kayak was rescued by a nearby fisherman.

The boy was reportedly not breathing when he was recovered but was conscious and alert by the times a medical helicopter arrived.

He was flown to the University of Texas Medical Branch and released this morning, Davis said.

The area where Suarez drowned is adjacent to marshland and is not patrolled by lifeguards, Davis said.

Suarez is the second person is less than a month to drown near the pass, where currents can be very strong.

On June 23, Jacob Szydlowski, a 19-year-old from Alvin, was swept away while fishing in the waters off the Brazoria County side of the pass.

Suarez is the seventh reported drowning in Galveston County waters this year. Two people have drowned at the San Luis Pass, three drowned off Galveston beaches and two more drowned on Bolivar Peninsula.
