View Full Version : Yesterday I was a People of WalMart

Well, not exactly a People of Walmart, more like a regular WalMart customer.

It was a Super WalMart with a big grocery store and it was Saturday about noon.

The very long line of cash registers were open and operating with human beings in only about one fifth of those cash registers.

There was almost no waiting in line with only one customer before me.

I mainly went to pick up my prescription and this store is only 1.5 miles from home.

I asked for help in finding two items. Both people who helped me had heavy accents. I am not sure if were from India or Mexico or where. One had far better English than the other but both were pleasant and eager to be helpful. I got real help in finding what I was looking for from one but not from the other.

The large store had very few customers and Saturday mid-day would normally be peak traffic time.
There was not even the long line of customers waiting to return items.

I noticed very high prices for food items. A pound of butter is like $4.50 for all but the $3.50 WalMart brand.

I bought several of the many supplements I take I guess at good low prices. Am getting burned out on ordering from Swansons or even WalMart online for supplements. WalMart superstores are stocking more and more supplements and that is good.

I buy the canned meal replacement drinks that are the Equate brand in the French Vanilla. It is a very good tasting product and the price has remained low, 4.88 for six 11 ounce plastic bottles. These are very good as a base of nutritional smoothies that you can add various things to like cocoa powder and instant coffee and a sweetner and frozen fruit.

I did not buy meat or high priced prepared foods.
I did buy about a $5 package of chicken wings.

Am going to try my dog on raw chicken wings - the BARF diet - bioavailable raw food diet - He liked it very much and goes wild and kind of does not know whether to gobble it up or bury it in his blanket. Kind of funny.

Anyway, my bill at checkout was $89.00 I was kind of shocked because I did not seem to buy much of anything. Am going to check over my register slip more carefully today.

I did get in and get out very quickly, something I did not think I would be able to do.

The whole atmosphere and environment I experienced at this WalMart superstore was vastly different from even 5 years ago, and it gave the impression of growing economic wasteland and depression.

I trust I don't need to tell you about the dogs + chicken bones = no-no thing.

IIRC chicken bones splinter in a way which risks the dog choking on them.

& something about dogs & chocolate is also a no-no, despite how happily they'll eat it. I forget how that worked, but recall chocolate is somehow deadly to dogs. So I trust you're not sharing your cocoa spiked smoothies with the canine.

Weird coz dog saliva is supposed to be some sort of bulletproof super-sterilizer.... I was in a household with a big Marmaduke dog & a couple cats, and the dog would occasionally, curiously/slyly, sample a litter-coated cat turd out of the litter box-- we'd notice him chewing on something like a gummy bear, & realize what he was chewing, and pry it out of his mouth. Eww.

walmart here is now offering online ordering of groceries. the pick and pack, you show up and they throw it in your car. I think you can order from some of the other departments too, not just groceries. Kroger and heb grocery stores offer same.

It is my understanding that raw chicken bones are just fine for dogs. It is cooked chicken bones that splinter and cause problems. I do not know about the larger beef and other animal bones with other kinds of raw means.

I bought the wings because they have very small bones. My dog ate two of those wings yesterday and seems to be doing fine. My Cesar dog food is like 99 cents for one small container and it is loaded with unhealthy ingredients, and you are supposed to feed two or three containers a day for even a small dog. That's a hundred a month and I cannot afford that. I am trying to move to good dry dog food and chicken wings. Sometimes you can get chicken wings and thighs for very inexpensive - like 50 cents to a dollar a pound.

I used to buy beef soup bones for an earlier dachshund, my beloved Archie, and I took him to the vet one time for a back problem and the vet asked me if I fed him bones and I do not know why but I lied and said no. Then he showed me the xrays and his tummy was full of large clearly visible chunks of bone. Boy was I embarrassed.

I knew about the chocolate being a big problem and sweets containing sugar is bad too.

There are some, usually larger, dogs that like to eat dog and cat excrement. Tommy at Off Grid Nation on YT has one dog that does that and they have never been able to solve that problem.

About 80% of the time, our Wal-Mart beats union grocery stores.

I wouldn't trust Wal-Mart store supplements. They simply don't carry high-quality brands. Almost all of it is chemical supplements, and a lot of it doesn't come near the label claims.

Swanson is more expensive, but you can trust what you get. Same with VitaCost.

Labdoor is a good, though not perfect site to compare brands:

Yes, things really are going downhill that fast...

They can't efficiently metabolize the theobromine, and it causes heart arrhythmia, sometimes fatal.

Substitute carob.

I duck into Walmart occasionally. The main reason I do is for the cans of Bar Harbor Smoked Wild Kippers. They come from the Gulf of Maine. They are simply Herring fillets that are smoked and come in a tin. I don't know if they are healthy but I don't want to eat anything from the Pacific. I love the little bastards.

About all I ever buy at ChinaMart is motor oil and windshield washer fluid. I certainly would not ingest anything sold there.

:|~ Well what do you do with the oil & wiper fluid then? Give them to thirsty a homeless person?! :(??

actually some of those aggressive NYC windshield wiper fockers might really appreciate the washer fluid. Next time you're rolling through NYC with your out of state plates, and one of the wiper focks attacks your windshield, just have that jug of wiper fluid at arms reach to tip them with. :)

The Bar Harbor products are great; best canned clam chowder in the world. Have you tried the German brands, e.g., Rügen Fisch?

A lot traditional German foods I'm not fond of, but I'm a sucker for Herring (including Kippers).

I am a herring fanatic. I haven't tried the German stuff. I will look into it.

My taste buds are notorious liars. If I believed them I would live off bacon, butter pecan ice cream, German beer and glazed donuts.

Rügen Fisch, Appel Feinkost, Richter, Alstertor and Hawesta are most easily obtained in America. They're sometimes available at discount closeout stores like Big Lots or Grocery Outlet. I've tried all those brands, with the first two my favorites. The German term for Kippers is Bücklingfilets.

Polar is a brand you'll see, but is lesser quality typically than true German brands (much but not nearly all of their stuff is German).

A British brand is John West:

Your taste buds are honest on two, possibly three of those items (even the donuts could be acceptable if done a certain way). Taste is a huge factor in determining quality, but, of course, one can't be using pure animal reactions as a measure (e.g., MSG triggering savory receptors). I can taste terroir of any product. Most think this is silly, but I know it's not. I especially enjoy battling with environ-mentalists who insist quality spring water "tastes the same" as EPA-approved tap water. My wife is a regular walking water quality lab; she can taste the slightest of impurities.

Unless we catch or grow it ourselves, one cannot be absolutely certain our food is safe and wholesome. And that's pretty much not possible, even in primitive societies. There is always a measure of trust, often blind. I don't rely on government agencies or corporations to declare things "safe and wholesome," either. I rely on my own senses and sense, but also that of others who also consume them and judge them according to rational measure.

Sounds pretty tasty. Sad to think we may not get any German beer or pork products in the future. The Bar Harbor Fillets are really good. You should run into Walmart and try them. They are cheaper at Walmart than even from the company itself over the internet. Don't know why but that is why I go there.

My Ex Wife's family were all from Germany and they turned me on to a lot of excellent food. Those Germans know how to eat. The breads and sausages are devine.
