Many hopeful Democrats are keeping their fingers crossed after a representative from California filed an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The impeachment was introduced on Wednesday and accuses the POTUS of obstructing justice during a federal investigation. While Democrats have been calling for impeachment since Trump first took office, this is the first time it's been introduced to the House of Representatives.
Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) was the one to file the impeachment article with lawmakers, arguing that the President firing FBI Director James Comey two months ago was an attempt to obstruct justice in the investigation into Russia. Comey was investigating whether the Kremlin colluded with the Trump team to interfere with the 2016 U.S. election.
Comey had testified that the president unsuccessfully attempted to get him to drop the probes into Russia, and when he wouldn't, the president fired him. If Comey's firing was an effort to thwart the investigation to cover up for any Trump-Russia ties, which can qualify as a reason to impeach. The President of the United States, according to the Constitution, can be impeached for 'high crimes and misdemeanors'.
“In all of this, Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office,” reads the article of impeachment.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, a spokesperson for the White House, says the move is just part of a political game. "I think that is utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst,” she said at a briefing.
The chances of the impeachment being pulled off are slim; it requires a majority vote in the House, which is currently controlled by Republicans. Not a lot of Democratic leaders have hope that it will go through yet, and believe talk of impeachment is premature at this point. They've called instead for an independent commission to look into the Trump-Russia election ties.
Sherman, however, wants to get the ball rolling. A number of Democratic lawmakers are convinced that Trump's impeachment is inevitable, it's just a question of when. Sherman is hoping the measure will “begin a long process to protect our country from abuse of power, obstruction of justice, and impulsive, ignorant incompetence.”
Throughout U.S. history, only two presidents have been impeached: Andrew Jackson for violating the Tenure of Office Act (which was later struck down as unconstitutional) and Bill Clinton for perjury and obstructing justice. No U.S. president has ever been removed from office, but there is always a first time.
If Trump were to be impeached, it wouldn’t mean Democrats would gain control of the Executive Branch. Vice President Mike Pence would be sworn in as president, and the GOP would remain in power.
Sherman, who says he has long been at odds with Vice President Mike Pence, finds it ironic that he himself would advocate proceedings that could put Pence in the Oval Office. “I served with Mike Pence in Congress for twelve years and I disagree with him on just about everything,” Sherman mused. “I never dreamed I would author a measure that would put him in the White House.”
