San Antonio's Robert E. Lee High School to Change Name

The school board of Robert E. Lee High School in San Antonio, Texas, voted to change (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/education/article/NEISD-board-votes-to-drop-name-of-Lee-High-School-12159774.php#photo-14017440) its name in the face of increasing pressure after the Charlottesville riots.

The entire board voted for the change, compared to a 5-2 vote to keep the name in 2015.

The school got rid of the Confederate flag in 1991. A petition for changing the school's name was backed by 12,000 people.
One group, SATX4, lobbied for the name change as well as the removal of Travis Park's Confederate monument in downtown San Antonio.

"The Confederacy cannot and should not be whitewashed," the group stated. "The idea that Robert E. Lee is part of a history that cannot be erased must be defeated. This stops today."

Students hugged and some cried after the board approved the change.

The Confederate general's ties to slavery sparked renewed controversy after deadly race riots in Charlottesville, Virginia, earlier this month.

Protesters have since defaced and torn down Confederate statues as well as some of Christopher Columbus and Abraham Lincoln.

I was born and raised in San Antonio and Robert E. Lee High School was one of the most storied schools in SA. The football games between the all white Robert E. Lee Rebels (now Hispanic majority by a long shot) and the all black Breckenridge Eagles (still all black) are Texas High School Football legend! Several players from both teams became College and NFL stars.

This was the will of a minority and is just more of the Cultural Marxist agenda of agitation. It will have the desired effect - division and radicalization.

In tyler tx 25m south of me there is a h/s with the same name, and the debate is hot and heavy on name changing. Way back when, blacks once freed owned most of the prime/divided x plantations with the whites holding their own, square miles thingy, but the blacks owned most. Then oil was discovered and shysters bought out mineral/ land rights if not stole the land..Several law suits ongoing now by blacks trying to recover what was stole from them back in the day.

Sorta can understand why blacks here want to get rid of any symbols of the old 'Jim Crow' days. Also can understand why others resist putting hurt into the past and want to return to jim crow days..
