President Trump Re-Tweets GIF Of Himself Hitting Hillary Clinton With A Golf Ball

News organizations were sent spiraling Sunday morning, as President Donald Trump, back to his old habits on social media, re-tweeted a GIF of himself, doctored to look as though he were hitting Hillary Clinton in the back with a golf ball.

The GIF is barely ten seconds long, created from spliced-together footage from a Trump golf event and infamous B-roll footage of the former Democratic presidential nominee tripping as she boarded a plane in Yemen during her time as Secretary of State. Trump is actually late to the party; the GIF has been making the rounds on social media for days, in response to Clinton's book tour media binge.

The tweet is juvenile and unbecoming of the President, to say the least, and certainly harkens back to the campaign, and to the beginning of Trump's administration, when his social media usage wasn't closely monitored, and he often tweeted photos, GIFs, and strange news stories at his opponents, both Republican and Democrat. Lately, the President has been less effusive on Twitter, probably the work of newly-minted Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly, who has been desperately trying to organize the White House's communications efforts.

But if Trump's tweet was bizarre, it was dwarfed only by the media response, which breathlessly reported, for hours Sunday morning, on the President's Twitter binge.

CNN made it part of their morning news coverage (http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/17/politics/trump-tweet-clinton/index.html), placing the story above more important developments in South Korea. ABC News printed that they'd "reached out to the White House" for further comment (http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-retweets-mockup-showing-hitting-golf-ball-knocks/story?id=49906855) on the tweet, and whether it was particularly meaningful in light of the week's other presidential developments. The New York Times turned the tweet into a nearly 1,000 word story (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/17/us/politics/hillary-golfball-trump-tweets.html?mcubz=1).

A quick Google search reveals hundreds — yes, hundreds — of stories on the now-infamous "golfball GIF."

The Huffington Post, always known for its subtle takes on the Trump Administration, eye-rollingly chastised the President for tweeting out "violence" against Hillary Clinton, accusing Trump of continuing his wave of "misogynistic attacks" against the former Secretary of State, as though Clinton herself is incapable of handling an internet image.

The article went on to note that the GIF merely drives home Clinton's excuses in What Happened, pointing out that Clinton is routinely the subject of "misogynistic attacks," and bemoans that attacks on the President — like Kathy Griffin's bizarre decapitated head shoot — receive more far more attention than anything leveled at Clinton during the campaign.
