The crisis surrounding Harvey Weinstein and allegations of sexual harassment dating back over 20 years has now expanded to include major Hollywood players including Matt Damon and Russell Crowe.

It has been claimed that in 2004 when Sharon Waxman was a new reporter with the New York Times she was handed ‘evidence of a pay-off’ from Weinstein to an unnamed women in London as part of a wider story she was researching that alleged Fabrizio Lombardo, head of film for Miramax Italy, ‘had no film experience and his real job was to take care of Weinstein’s women needs, among other things’.

However despite having what she called ‘the facts’ as well as on the record sources ‘citing evenings [Lombardo] organised with Russian escorts’ the story never ran after ‘intense pressure from Weinstein, which included having Matt Damon and Russell Crowe call me directly to vouch for Lombardo’.

Miramax was Weinstein’s company and was, at the time, owned by Disney. The production company produced films by Damon including Good Will Huntong, and The Talented Mr Ripley, and Crowe’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Waxman went on to become the founder of Hollywood trade website The Wrap, and in her open letter she admitted that she was left ‘devastated after traveling to two countries and overcoming immense challenges to confirm at least part of the story that wound up running last week, more than a decade later’.

Claims were reported in The New York Times alleging Weinstein had sexually harassed female employees and actresses for nearly thirty years, reportedly reaching private settlements with eight of the women.

Weinstein released a statement saying he ‘so respects women’ and apologised for ‘causing pain’ but also claimed that he would be suing the New York Times for ‘reckless reporting’. The paper is standing by their story.

The Weinstein Company later confirmed that they had fired him from his position.

‘In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company – Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar – have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately,’ read a statement from his company on Monday evening.

Actresses Susan Sarandon and Heather Graham both threw support behind Ashley Judd, who spoke on record about being a victim of Weinstein’s sexual harassment.

Rose McGowan is the highest-profile of Weinstein’s accusers, with it emerging she reportedly sued the movie producer for making advances on her during the production of the Weinstein-produced 1996 teen slasher film Scream.

Another former employee of TWC, Lauren O’Connor spoke out in 2015, telling executives that women were faced with a ‘toxic environment’. It followed her being told by a female assistant that Weinstein had coerced her into giving him a massage while he was naked. She was apparently left ‘crying and very distraught’. O’connor had written in her report: ‘There is a toxic environment for women at this company.’

An arrest warrant has been obtained for actress Rose McGowan for possession of a controlled substance.

It stems from a police investigation of personal belongings left behind on a United flight arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport on 20 January.

Police say the items tested positive for narcotics. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department obtained the warrant on 1 February with spokesman Rob Yingling telling Deadline that investigators believe the personal belongings to be McGowan's.

McGowan has been one of the leading voices against sexual harassment in Hollywood in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. The actress herself brought news of the warrant to light on social media, claiming it's part of a conspiracy to silence her allegations of rape against the disgraced film producer.
