Got the red sun here in Sweden too, just took this photo with my iPhone, it is an hour away from high noon. At Facebook I read it was sand from Sahara, in the atmosphere creating the effect...

Of course that could have been a possibility, if it was only in Birmingham and here in Sweden, but across the Atlantic as well? Don't think so!
