Trump says Comey 'totally protected' Clinton, swipes at DOJ as new documents confirm claims

President Trump declared on Twitter Wednesday that James Comey "totally protected Hillary Clinton," after the FBI confirmed the former bureau boss drafted a statement on the private email case two months before it was over.

In a series of tweets, Trump also swiped at the Justice Department, seeming to suggest they review what he called an apparent "fix."
“Wow, FBI confirms report that James Comey drafted letter exonerating Crooked Hillary Clinton long before investigation was complete,” Trump tweeted. “Many people not interviewed, including Hillary Clinton herself. Comey stated under oath that he didn’t do this –obviously a fix? Where is Justice Dept?”

GOWDY WANTS COMEY TO TESTIFY AGAIN (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/17/rep-gowdy-wants-comey-to-testify-again-following-clinton-email-draft-release.html)

The flurry of tweets was in reference to the FBI releasing documents this week (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/16/comey-drafted-clinton-email-exoneration-letter-before-completing-interviews-fbi-confirms.html) that prove Comey began drafting a statement regarding the Clinton email investigation months before he interviewed her and other key witnesses. The document release was titled “Drafts of Director Comeys July 5, 2016 Statement Regarding Email Server Investigation Part 01 of 01.”

The release bolstered critics' claims that Comey was drafting an "exoneration statement" well before ending the case and recommending against criminal charges.

The contents of the newly released emails, however, were largely unclear as the majority of the document was redacted. The records, that are now public, show the email titled “Midyear Exam—UNCLASSIFIED” was sent by Comey on May 2, 2016 to FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, General Counsel James Baker and James Rybicki, chief of staff and senior counselor.

Trump's Wednesday challenge to the Justice Department regarding the matter was a throwback to his summer criticism of the nation's top law enforcement official, Attorney General Jeff Sessions. While Trump had been at odds with one of his earliest supporters over the decision to recuse in the Russia probe, Trump in recent weeks has dialed down that criticism.

The existence of the Comey documents was first brought to light by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., after they reviewed transcripts with top Comey aides who alluded to the email’s existence.

The Judiciary Committee penned a letter on Aug. 30 to newly appointed FBI Director Christopher Wray noting their findings, saying that “it appears that in April or early May of 2016, Mr. Comey had already decided he would issue a statement exonerating Secretary Clinton. That was long before FBI agents finished their work.”

“The outcome of an investigation should not be prejudged while FBI agents are still hard at work trying to gather the facts,” the letter stated.
The existence of these documents raised questions over Comey’s June 2017 Senate testimony regarding his decision to go public with findings in the Clinton email investigation. Comey noted former Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s involvement in the probe, including her controversial meeting with former President Bill Clinton days before his wife was interviewed.

Last week, the FBI said it uncovered 30 pages of documents related to that controversial 2016 tarmac meeting.

Gowdy wants Comey to testify again following Clinton email draft release

Following the FBI’s release of documents (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/16/comey-drafted-letter-on-clinton-email-investigation-before-completing-interviews-fbi-confirms.html) confirming that former FBI Director James Comey began drafting a letter on the Hillary Clinton email investigation months before completing several interviews, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C. said Comey needs to testify before Congress again.

Gowdy, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee and a member of the House Intelligence and Judiciary Committee, told Fox News’ Bret Baier on “Special Report” Tuesday night that “for a number of reasons” Comey should return to Capitol Hill and the committees needed to further examine the FBI memos before he did.

“Whenever somebody decides to charge someone, there are lots of layers of scrutiny. When you decide not to charge someone, there aren’t that many layers of scrutiny but there ought to be at least a couple,” Gowdy said. “The media should do it but also Congress should look at this decision not to charge and whether or not it was made before you interviewed two dozen witnesses, including the target of the investigation, yeah we need to talk to him again.”

COMEY INSISTED NO ‘SPECIAL’ RULES IN FBI CLINTON PROBE – WHIEL DRAFTING ‘EXONERATION STATEMENT’
(http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/17/comey-insisted-no-special-rules-in-fbi-clinton-probe-while-drafting-exoneration-statement.html)
According to Gowdy, the timeline of events and some of Comey’s decisions along the way did not appear to add up. He was referring to Comey’s statement during his June congressional testimony (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/06/08/comey-testimony-highlights-7-big-moments.html) in which he said the tarmac meeting between former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and former President Bill Clinton encouraged him to announce his findings in the email investigation.

“His ostensible reason for taking that decision away from the Department of Justice was that meeting on the tarmac but yet a month and a half earlier he is memorializing a decision he’s already made so the chronology does not add up,” Gowdy said. “His answers have been all over the map.”

Gowdy also told the Fox News anchor that he not only wants to talk to Comey, but also plans to speak to his former colleagues.
When asked whether Loretta Lynch, who is expected to be on Capitol Hill Friday concerning the Russia investigation, would be asked about Comey’s email draft, Gowdy said she would not.

COMEY DRAFTED LETTER ON CLINTON EMAIL INVESTIGATION BEFORE COMPLETING INTERVIEWS, FBI CONFIRMS (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/16/comey-drafted-letter-on-clinton-email-investigation-before-completing-interviews-fbi-confirms.html)

But he said there were “lots of reasons” to talk to her as well, in that she could “corroborate or contradict Comey’s recollection” about their conversation regarding his decision to make the announcement.

Baier’s interview also touched on Gowdy’s investigation into Samantha Power, the former ambassador to the United Nations during the Obama administration, and her office’s request to unmask at least 260 individuals heard on surveillance recordings.

Gowdy said during questioning, Power testified that she had not personally made all of the requests, despite them being filed under her name. He said the committee had to find out whether someone else in the intelligence community was actually behind those requests.

NewYorkPost: James Comey testifies before Senate panel on Russia investigation (https://nypost.com/2020/09/30/james-comey-testifies-before-senate-panel-on-russia-investigation/)

(September 30, 2020)
Former FBI Director James Comey is expected to testify Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee as part of its investigation into the agency’s Russia “collusion” probe of the 2016 election.

Comey will appear before the panel chaired by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has accused the FBI of obtaining illegal secret warrants using flawed information and unsubstantiated claims in a now-debunked dossier compiled by British former spy Christopher Steele to monitor former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

“The day of reckoning is upon us when it comes to Crossfire Hurricane,” the South Carolina Republican said in a Fox News interview earlier this month, referring to the name of the collusion probe.

The Justice Department inspector general last year found “significant inaccuracies and omissions” in documents submitted by the FBI to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to monitor Page...

Comey’s testimony comes a day after Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe on Tuesday informed Graham of an allegation that Hillary Clinton ordered “a campaign plan to stir up a scandal” by linking Trump to Russia in 2016 — and that President Barack Obama was aware.
