In essence they found a tooth in Germany almost 10 million years old that resembles 'Lucy's' (3.5 myo).

There really is not much of evolutionary pressure in Africa, as climate is comfortable and has remained pretty much the same for millions of year. Instead it may be seen as a refuge when climate becomes too difficult in Eurasia. 70,000 years ago it was the height of the ice age, not strange that Homo Sapiens Sapiens took refuge to the Horn of Africa, and hybridized Homo Erectus in Africa, more or less...
