NYPD responding to reports of shots fired in Lower Manhattan

Police in New York City are responding to a report of gunfire a few blocks from the World Trade Center memorial in Manhattan.
The police department posted on its Twitter feed that one person was in custody.

A large number of police vehicles could be seen near West Street and Chambers Street, which is near a community college, a high school and a few blocks north of the National Sept. 11 Memorial.

It was unclear if anyone had been injured.

Police tweeted that one person has been taken into custody and "no others outstanding."

Witnesses reportedly told local media that a vehicle drove down a popular bike path and hit pedestrians and people biking. Witnesses also said the incident may have been caused by a fight between two truck drivers.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the situation, and is heading to the scene. The mayor's press secretary tweeted there was "NO active threat."

"At least six people were killed and about 15 injured Tuesday afternoon when a driver entered a popular bike path in lower Manhattan and mowed down pedestrians and bikers, according to fire and police officials.

The driver of the vehicle is in custody in connection with the incident, which occurred at about 3 p.m., the New York City Police Department said.
Police said a driver entered the bike path along the West Side highway near Chambers Street, striking and killing several people. The vehicle hit another car. The suspect then exited his vehicle, and displayed what police believe to be a B.B. or pellet gun, according to a police official.
NYPD officers shot the suspect, the official said."
