Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies beginning next Monday will conduct a week-long sweep of those who are behind on child-support payments.
More deputies than typical will be assigned to tracking down those subject of a bench warrant due to lateness in making payments through Macomb County Friend of the Court, officials said. Deputies will search throughout Southeast Michigan for some of the 3,400 people with outstanding warrants.
Friend of Court Director Thomas Blohm said the sweep is the promised follow-up to a one-week amnesty program conducted by the FOC in October in which delinquents could pay $500 to resolve a child-support bench warrant. Forty-four people took advantage.
“We indicated we would be doing a sweep afterward, and here it is,” Blohm said.
The FOC conducts sweeps roughly about once a year (http://www.macombdaily.com/article/MD/20160824/NEWS/160829789), although they are not scheduled at the same time each year. Blohm said announcing it a week ahead of time gives delinquents the last chance to resolve their issue so they can avoid incarceration and their children can have a happy holiday season.
Those who wish to resolve their warrant can appear at the FOC office at 10 N. Main St. in downtown Mount Clemens. Blohm said delinquents need to “engage with us, talk with us” about their situation and set up a payment plan within their means.
“It depends on their circumstance ... on their ability to pay,” he said.
Those who are arrested will be jailed and forced to appear in front of a family judge at Macomb County Circuit Court. The judge can order payment and jail the delinquent to up to 90 days on the civil warrant. The action can be a precursor to a felony child-support warrant via the state Attorney General or Macomb prosecutors.
Arrearages by delinquents ranges from less than $1,000 to more than $100,000, Blohm said.
Sheriff’s deputies also asked that anyone who knows the location of a child-support scofflaw can report it at 586-469-5756 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
