L.A. County hate crimes linked to white supremacists jumped 67% in 2016, study finds

Los Angeles County saw a surge in reported hate crimes last year linked to white supremacists, with a wave of incidents targeting Jews, Muslims and African Americans, according to a study released Thursday.

Immigrants have also been targeted, prompting officials to call in sheriff’s deputies to maintain calm at public meetings.

“For the last several months we’ve had to alert the Sheriff’s Department because white supremacists and anti-immigrants groups have been disruptive in communities like Cudahy,” county Supervisor Hilda Solis said. “Residents are fearful to attend these meetings because these groups have shown up yelling fearful rhetoric and even brandishing weapons at times.”

Reported hate crimes linked to white supremacists jumped from 63 in 2015 to 105 last year, a 67% increase, according to the annual study conducted by the L.A. County Commission on Human Relations.

Overall, 482 incidents were reported, roughly the same as in 2015. But that followed a 24% jump from 2014 to 2015 — a surge that the study said was fueled in part by anti-Muslim reaction to the Dec. 2, 2015, terror attack in San Bernardino.

The study found that a majority of the reported hate crimes linked to white supremacists — 52% — were motivated by religion and targeted mostly Jews. Last year, swastikas were found on vehicles, synagogues, schools and Jewish-owned businesses.

Race was the motivation for 36% of the white supremacist hate crimes, the study found. The most frequently targeted group in these crimes were African Americans.

The study also found that L.A. County saw an increase in gender-based crimes, particularly against transgender people. There were 39 reported gender-based crimes compared with 22 the year before — a 77% increase.
The most targeted within that group in 2016 was Latina transgender women.

Mariana Marroquin, an anti-violence project manager at the Los Angeles LGBT Center, said she was attacked about 20 years ago by a group of people because of her gender identity.

“I was beat up and stripped while my attackers were planning how to kill me,” said Marroquin, who identifies as a transgender woman and an immigrant. “We can do better…. We are survivors and fighters, and we came so far that we cannot go back.”

The study covered the period during and after the 2016 presidential campaign, in which President Trump made a series of controversial comments about Muslims and Mexicans. Critics have complained that his comments emboldened white nationalist groups.

The study found that after the election, from Nov. 8 through Dec. 31, there were 82 reported incidents — a 9% increase from the previous year.

For instance, shortly after the election mosques in L.A. County received a series of handwritten letters praising Trump and calling for the eradication of Muslims in the country.

While L.A. County’s total showed no increase, reports of hate crimes have been on the rise in recent years across California and the nation.

The California attorney general’s office reported an 11.2% statewide increase in hate crimes in 2016. According to FBI statistics released this week, hate crimes across the nation were up 5% in 2016 from the previous year.

The study, which has been conducted annually since 1980, is based on reports from every law enforcement agency in L.A. County and community-based organizations.

Indiana Groups Continue Push For Hate Crimes Legislation

A large collection of leaders from organizations representing different cultural and religious groups in Indiana is calling on state lawmakers to finally pass hate crimes legislation this year.

The group gathered at the statehouse on Nov. 21 to highlight the fact that Indiana is one of only a handful of states without a law addressing bias-motivated crimes.

Director of Education and Advocacy for the Indianapolis Urban League Mark Russel says passing a hate crimes law will not only protect Hoosiers, but also make the state more competitive.

“We cannot continue to put emphasis as much as it is needed on Indiana being a climate where businesses wish to come while we ignore the needs of our citizens,” Russel says.

Previous attempts to pass legislation that increases the penalties for hate crimes have failed at the statehouse. But Senate Democrats listed it as one of their priorities again this year.

House Speaker Brian Bosma endorsed the idea of such legislation in the wake of white supremacist violence in Charlottesville, Virginia over the summer.

The Rise of Hate Crimes In America

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently released a report revealing the disturbing fact that the United States experienced a significant increase in hate crimes last year.

While the F.B.I.’s data is tragic, it hardly comes as a surprise – our nation has become increasingly divided over the past few years, Americans from a myriad of different backgrounds have grown distrustful of one another.

In the past, we could disagree on certain issues without demonizing those of differing viewpoints. Now, political discourse has changed, and not for the better. Identity politics has prevented us from seeing one another as individuals

The left has their theory as to why the rate of hate crimes has risen, but it is essential that we take a look at the big picture if we are going to identify the real reasons for this trend.
Hate Crimes Have Increased

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the number of hate crimes increased 4.6% between 2015 and 2016. Last year the F.B.I. counted 6,121 incidents. In 2015, there were 5,580 incidents.

The data shows that racial bias motivated 58% of hate crimes. About half of these were attacks committed against black Americans. 21% of hate crimes were driven by religious bias. Jews made up half of these attacks while about 25% of the victims were Muslims.

The Washington Post reports that “racially motivated attacks on Arabs jumped 38% from 2015.” The Post also reports that “attacks on Muslims, which spiked 67 percent in 2015, rose an additional 19 percent last year to more than 300 reported incidents.” It is the highest number of hate crimes against Muslims since 2001.

Interestingly enough, The Post also points out that crimes against Hispanics rose 15% while attacks against whites increased 17%. Moreover, hate crimes committed against transgender people increased 44%.

WaPo: Let’s Blame Trump

True to form, The Washington Post used the F.B.I.’s report to blame President Donald Trump for the rise in hate crimes. “It’s noteworthy that any of the groups against whom crimes rose by double digits were the focus of inflammatory rhetoric by Donald Trump over the course of his presidential campaign,” they write.

Instead of publishing a piece exploring why hate crimes have increased, The Post felt it was more important to blame Trump for the rise in these types of incidents. However, while the F.B.I.’s data on hate crimes is compelling, it doesn’t quite bear out The Washington Post’s theory.

The total number of incidents increased in 2013, dipped in 2014, and began climbing again in 2015. Trump announced his presidency in July of 2015. The notion that Trump’s “inflammatory” rhetoric towards radical Muslims and illegal immigrants raised the rate of hate crimes by 4.6% within five months is absurd. Moreover, there is evidence showing that there are other explanations for the increase in attacks against Muslims and Hispanics.

Anti-illegal immigration opinions were prevalent before Trump became a voice on the issue. A 2014 Rasmussen poll showed that 59% of Americans believed that the U.S. should deport illegal immigrants who had just arrived in the country. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in the same year revealed that 70% of Americans believed that illegal immigration threatened “traditional U.S. beliefs and customs.”

Furthermore, in January of 2015, a Gallup poll showed that 60% of Americans were dissatisfied with current immigration levels – they felt the U.S. should accept fewer immigrants. Lastly, another Rasmussen poll in 2015 found that 51% of likely voters believed the U.S. should build a wall on the southern border.

Besides hate crimes and hate groups, pronounced segregation is also a sign of racism in America. In last few years there have been many attempts to measure segregation in America’s largest cities – for instance, professors John Logan and Brian Stults of Brown and Florida State University identified segregation in 50 metro areas using 2010 census data, Dustin Cable of University of Virginia created the map of segregation in America, FiveThirtyEight calculated integration/segregation index in 100 most populous cities, and so on. All these sources show how a city’s residents of the same race cluster together, so there is a clear division between white, black and Hispanic neighborhoods.

A racial division in space is accompanied by socio-economic differences. In many of below-listed cities, the median household income gap between black and white families is wider than national white/black household earnings’ gap of $22,681. Moreover, black poverty rates are significantly higher in here mentioned place compared to national poverty rate among African Americans of 27.4%.

His death was ruled a suicide, but after the pieces didn’t add up, his family pushed for another explanation. Now, 30 years, and three inquests later, a judge has found that Johnson did not, in fact, take his own life, but was the victim of a gay hate crime.

On Thursday, Magistrate Michael Barnes, the state coroner, ruled that Johnson “fell from the cliff top as a result of actual or threatened violence by unidentified persons who attacked him because they perceived him to be homosexual.”

In 2013, the police in New South Wales—which includes Sydney—opened a review of the deaths of 88 men between 1976 and 2000 to assess whether they should be reclassified as hate crimes.

Man charged in hate crime shooting at Olathe bar enters plea of not guilty

The defendant charged with fatally shooting an Indian national inside an Olathe bar has pleaded not guilty.

Adam Purinton was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Srinivas Kuchibhotla in February 2017.

He was also charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, as Alok Madasani and Ian Grillot were also injured in the shooting.

Prosecutors allege that Purinton targeted the the victims because of their race or ethnicity.

The shooting happened at Austins Bar & Grill.

According to “Police-Reported Hate Crime, 2016,” released Tuesday, Jews were victimized 221 times, up from 178 the previous year, a rise of more than 20 percent. Blacks were next at 214 incidents and those victimized due to sexual orientation, 176.
