Central Michigan University shooting leaves two dead, gunman on the loose

by Corky Siemaszko

The sprawling Central Michigan University campus was on lockdown Friday after two people were killed and police were hunting for an "armed and dangerous" gunman, university police confirmed.

Neither of the victims found dead at Campbell Hall were students and police identified the "person of interest" as 19-year-old James Eric Davis, who appears to be enrolled at the school.

"We believe this situation was a domestic type incident," said Lt. Larry Klaus of the CMU campus police. "He was last seen running in a northbound direction."

"We believe the subject is in the city limits now," added Officer Jeff Brown of the Mount Pleasant police department.
Klaus did not say what sparked the shooting, but said police had contact with Davis overnight for a drug-related incident of some kind. Davis was taken to McLaren Macomb Medical Center and released, he said.

Rachel Blizzard, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said after the press conference that Davis was never a patient there and may have gone to another ER facility in Mount Pleasant.

In any event, Davis was not admitted and at around 8:30 am CT (9:30 a.m. ET) gunfire erupted on the fourth floor of the dorm, police said.

The CMU student government sent a tweet urging students to "stay inside and lock your doors." Parents were urged to stay away from the campus and not try to pick up their children.

Klaus said did not say what kind of weapon was used in the deadly shooting but said guns are banned at CMU. "We have a gun free policy on the campus," he said.

CMU has more than 20,000 students and is one of the biggest universities in the country. Mount Pleasant is about 155 miles northwest of Detroit.

The shooting comes as the nation is still reeling from the Valentine's Day massacre of 17 students at a Parkland, Florida, high school (https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/police-respond-shooting-parkland-florida-high-school-n848101), which has reignited the contentious debate over gun control.

(WJBK) - The Central Michigan shooting has rattled the suburban Chicago community where in the suspect grew up.

Logan Ludy played basketball in high school with the suspected shooter, 19-year-old James Davis Jr.

"Just from knowing him for a brief time, I didn't think that would happen," he said. "It is unbelievable."

Friends say Davis was quiet, polite and kind, the product of a good family.

"It's unbelievable to tell you the truth," Logan said. "I didn't know something like that could happen to somebody I knew."

The Leal family spent a lot of time with the Davis family - the suspected shooter, James, and his parents, also the alleged victims in the shooting.

Father James Eric Davis Sr. and 47-year-old Diva. Neighbors say she was a flight attendant and a wonderful mother, James was retired from the military work as a part-time police officer for 20 years in west suburban Bellwood, his home town.

"They were a loving, close family, and they were really proud of him going to college," said Juan Leal.

The Davises were reportedly picking up their son from college for spring break when the shooting happened about 8:30 a.m. inside Campbell Hall on campus.

But Lt. Larry Klaus of the campus police department said Davis Jr. was taken to a hospital Thursday night by campus police because of a drug-related health problem, possibly an overdose. Authorities did not elaborate.

Well that turned to crap real fast, college kid with two loving parents turned into prisoner doing life with no one to care...and drugs appear to be the cause.
