YouTube is one of the companies that introduced new policies after the Parkland shooting. In late March, it quietly debuted restrictions on some gun-related video content, Bloomberg News reported. The National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents gun manufacturers, called the new policy “worrisome” in a statement to Bloomberg News in late March.

YouTube has also come under scrutiny for the way its platforms have been used after mass shootings to spread conspiracy theories that mass shootings are hoaxes perpetrated to advance gun control and that grieving survivors and family members of shooting victims who appear in the media are “crisis actors".

As it turns out, Tuesday's shooting at YouTube headquarters (which has so far resulted in zero deaths other than that of the shooter, who committed suicide) had nothing to do with domestic violence and everything to do with blowback to YouTube's demonetization efforts - as many initially feared.

The shooter was identified as Nasim Aghdam who slammed YouTube for purportedly censoring her after she claimed that they demonetized her channels, including an exercise one devoted to exercise videos and another devoted to veganism. Aghdam channeled her anger toward YouTube into a paranoid manifesto published online. She wrote in her purported manifesto: "Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!"

She identified herself as an Iranian activist as well as an animal rights activist. Shortly after she was identified, photos of her holding signs with anti-YouTube messages were found online and shared.

She recently published a video ranting about her treatment by YouTube, complaining that they'd deprived her of views. She said the practice was tantamount to censorship. She also maintained a website that remained live late Tuesday evening. It lists five channels for Aghdam.

And driving that point home, she published a video debating whether the US or Iran did more to protect freedom of speech.

A Facebook artist page she created had more than 1,600 followers according to a cached version from archive.org. The Facebook page contains a trove of videos. They range in subject matter from lighthearted and comical to recipes for helping people eat vegan, as well as her exercise videos.

Contrary to initial reports, ABC said Aghdam wasn't in a relationship with anyone at the facility (so much for those initial suspicions).

She did not have an ID badge, and was carrying a purse. Aghdam was apparently a prolific maker of YouTube videos, maintaining several accounts for videos of different subjects.

this one mexican guy said shooter shot one person 10 times - outside of the yt building. mex was one of the people at carl jr when the asian lady shot in the leg arrived. he said he ran over to the shooting, heard shots 4 - 10 - 4. that 10 was one person, shot all to hell

Chaos erupted on the YouTube campus in San Bruno Tuesday afternoon when an alleged female shooter entered the campus and opened fire. San Bruno police say she wounded three employees before killing herself.

ABC7 News sources confirm the YouTube shooter was a user of the platform. Nasim Aghdam has a website with an alleged manifesto that targets YouTube for censorship and demonetization of her video content.

San Bruno police later confirmed Aghdam as the suspect as well.

Aghdam is said to have no relationship with anyone in the YouTube facility.

Sources contacted by ABC7 News say that Aghdam did not have an ID badge, but was carrying a purse, and that nobody in the facility knew who she was.

According to her website, a possible motivation for the shooting could have been tied to her many YouTube accounts, which she says have seen a decline in viewership over the past few months.

Police and witnesses say a woman opened fire Tuesday at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, wounding three people before fatally shooting herself as terrified employees huddled inside.

She embedded videos from the biggest YouTubers on the platform in her website, including massive creator Casey Neistat. In them, they talk about the YouTube "Ad-Pocalypse" where many users are seeing massive dips in traffic, subscriber count loss, and demonetization of videos.

Neistat has more than 9,000,000 subscribers and made a famous video about the YouTube ad revenue scare for creators.

It appears that Aghdam was disgruntled by the changes in the YouTube platform. She wrote on her website, "Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!"

She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, "Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it."

The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. "There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos."

Aghdam's website shows screenshots of her "reduced" and "supressed" videos. She referred to a specific video that appeared to be an instructional video for a workout saying, "This video got age-restricted after new, close-minded YouTube employees got control of my farsi YouTube channel last year, 2016, and began filtering my videos to reduce views and suppress and discourage me from making my videos!"

Feb. 20, YouTube enacted a new advertising policy that demonetized channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time. Though Aghdam's main English channel had more than 5,000 subscribers, many of her videos appeared to be demonetized.

A YouTube manager’s Twitter account was hacked to spread fake news during shooting



As Twitter users searched for news about today’s shooting at YouTube headquarters (https://www.theverge.com/2018/4/3/17194228/youtube-active-shooter-san-bruno-police), hackers were actively compromising a verified employee account to spread misinformation.

In the midst of the attack, an unknown hoaxer hijacked a verified Twitter account belonging to Vadim Lavrusik, a product manager at YouTube, and used the high-profile account to implicate a YouTube broadcaster in the shooting.

The account hijacking seems to have taken place while Lavrusik and his colleagues were still near the scene of the attack. Lavrusik reported himself safe at 2:36PM PT, and the hoax tweets began posting just 20 minutes later.

“PLEASE HELP ME FIND MY FRIEND I LOST HIM IN THE SHOOTING,” one fake tweet read, linking to a picture of Keemstar, a popular YouTuber, which was posted to Flipboard (http://flip.it/RtSuS8). Keemstar is not believed to have been involved in the shooting.

The hack was flagged by multiple reporters, and Twitter removed the hoax tweets shortly afterward. CEO Jack Dorsey personally responded that the platform would handle the situation. Even after Twitter executives became aware of the compromise, hoax tweets were still being regularly posted to Lavrusik’s account, only to be instantly deleted. It’s still unclear how the account was first compromised.

Twitter has struggled with misinformation around breaking news events in the past, and a number of other YouTube celebrities have already been erroneously reported (https://twitter.com/JaneLytv/status/981272322777780224) as involved in today’s shooting.
