An Army (ours) colonel told me this one years ago.
He was at a National Guard base somewhere in the south. A bunch of new NG men came in and they had an indoctrination meeting. At this meeting this little Army major made a point of what the penalties would be if camp rules were violated.
From the back of the tent came a voice "Major we are only going to be here for two weeks so what can you do that makes a difference in that time?"
He said five soldiers had to restrain the major from climbing over tables to the speaker.
So what would he have done if he had gotten through? There are penalties for striking enlisted men.
My speculation is that this was a farce presented for the benefit of others present to impress upon them the sincerity of the major. It was all for show.
