A church needs a roof so before going to the banker for the money they obtained pledges from the membership of how much each would support the project. The average member pledged $500. The Doctor pledged $2,000. The lawyer pledged $2,500. The banker loaned the money. The roof got put on but contributions fell short so the banker had to call on the pledges. A total of $50,000 was owed on the project.
The average member had $1,500 in savings. The Doctor had $30,000 in savings. The lawyer had $250,000 in savings. The banker took the entire $50,000 owed him from the lawyers account. The fact that he had only pledged $2,500 made no difference at all.
The system doesn't make a problem for itself by getting everyone pissed off. They are entitled to go after the one with the fattest bank account.

... that is the problem
The banker doesn't see it that way.
Evidently neither does the church.
Years back I bought some 90% silver halves from EBAY from a guy in Maryland. He would pick the silver out of the collection basket and replace them with nickel clad. Church didn't seem to care. The books balanced at the end of the day.
I would hesitate to sign a pledge today. Likely come back and bite me.
