Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini has written an urgent letter to the Valletta authorities to communicate that this is the "safest port", so it is up to them to give the green light to the 'docking. The unprecedented decision to block entry was made by Salvini as well as Italy's Minister of Infrastructure, Danilo Toninelli, following several recent dockings - and is a signal that the country's new populist government will no longer bear the brunt of unchecked migration from North Africa into Europe.
The last two days have been marked by the departure of over a thousand migrants towards the European coasts. In the first weekend as Minister of the Interior of Salvini, in the ports of Reggio Calabria and Pozzallo were three ships landed with about 500 refugees on board. During the night another 600 people were rescued and transhipped on the Aquarius ship, the object of the clash with Malta. Salvini, the leader of the conservative League party, assumed his role as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior on June 1. He is currently on the road to rally support for his party's candidates in the south of Italy, attending a rally last Sunday in Sicily - a prime destination for most of the hundreds of thousands of migrants which have poured into Italy in recent years, mostly from Libya.

A controversial agreement between Italy's former centre left government and authorities and militias in Libya has triggered a fall in overall arrivals of some 75 percent since the summer of 2017. But since the start of this year, Italian authorities have registered more than 13,500 arrivals.

On Tuesday, Salvini met with EU interior ministers in Luxembourg to discuss the EU's controversial "Dublin" rule, which requires that would-be refugees file for asylum in the first bloc member-state they arrive at. The rule heavily penalizes Italy, which has accepted over 700,000 refugees since 2013.
