He's doing it on purpose.

Its making CNN into a joke. Trump is bringing CNN down to his level. Trump doesn't care about optics, and rolling in the mud with CNN only hurts CNN's reputation, not his.

He could justifiably pull Jim Acosta's press credentials at any time for his behavior, especially during the North Korea summit and now this. But he's having too much fun baiting him every chance he gets.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Saturday that the White House decided to cancel an interview between CNN and national security adviser John Bolton after a CNN reporter “disrespected” President Trump earlier this week.

CNN’s “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper on Saturday tweeted that the White House intervened and canceled a scheduled interview with Bolton, who “remains fully prepared to do the interview” on Sunday.

“Actually a @CNN reporter disrespected @POTUS & PM May during their press [conference],” Sanders tweeted in response. “Instead of rewarding bad behavior, we decided to reprioritize the TV appearances for administration officials.”

Sanders was referring to Trump's refusal to take questions from the network on Friday during an international press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May.
Trump lashed out at the network after CNN reporter Jim Acosta tried to ask him a question.

“CNN is fake news. I don’t take questions from CNN,” Trump responded.

“Let’s go to a real network,” he added, giving a question to Fox News's John Roberts.

“Well we’re a real network too, sir,” Acosta responded.

Roberts said in a statement on Friday that Trump’s comments about CNN were “unfair” and criticized Trump for also attacking NBC.

Roberts, however, took heat from a CNN executive for not defending his fellow journalists in the moment.

“Nice try,” Matt Dornic, vice president of communications and digital partnerships, tweeted. “Your omission is glaring and your compliment backhanded. Next time try and show some class in the moment. And in your statement.”


Dornic later shared that Roberts had blocked him on Twitter.

CNN senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta expressed concern on Tuesday with the way President Trump (http://thehill.com/people/donald-trump)'s supporters heckle members of the press, warning that the president's rhetoric could "result in somebody getting hurt."


Acosta posted a video from Trump's rally in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday showing supporters shouting down members of the press. At one point, one man in the crowd looks into the camera and yells, "stop lying."


"Just a sample of the sad scene we faced at the Trump rally in Tampa," Acosta tweeted. "I’m very worried that the hostility whipped up by Trump and some in conservative media will result in somebody getting hurt. We should not treat our fellow Americans this way. The press is not the enemy."

Trump has made his ongoing feud with media outlets that cover his administration critically a centerpiece of his brand of politics, often referring to coverage he deems unfavorable to him as "fake news."


He has also repeatedly called reporters the "enemy of the people." That particular accusation was the subject of a meeting earlier this month between Trump and A.G. Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times.


Trump revealed the existence of the off-the-record meeting (http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/399381-trump-meets-with-new-york-times-publisher-to-discuss-fake-news) in a tweet on Sunday, writing that the two "spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, 'Enemy of the People.' "


That prompted a response from Sulzberger, who said in a statement that he had met with the president to urge him to tone town his attacks on the media at large.


"I told him that although the phrase 'fake news' is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists 'the enemy of the people,' " Sulzberger said.


"I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence."
