Asked about his lack of training as a pilot, Zemarcuis Devon Scott, 18, allegedly told Texarkana, Ark., police that he didn't believe there was much more to the task than pushing buttons and pulling levers

Well, technically he's not wrong... it's the knowing what, where and when of the levers and buttons that's the tricky part. "V1...Ro-tate, muthafucka!" LOL

He would have never even managed to start those engines, much less get off the ground.

If he could have figured out how to start the engines (highly unlikely, but there may be how-to jootube videos ) chances are reasonably good he could have gotten airborne (but for how long?), the trick is getting it back on the ground and parked without breaking it.

Kinda reminds me of those stone age Africans who have dreams of flying and fashion together junk to resemble an aircraft.
