WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - A new US constitutional amendment will be proposed in Congress next week that if passed would prevent President Donald Trump from revoking security clearances at his own discretion, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Mark Warner, said in a statement.

"I will be introducing an amendment next week to block the President from punishing and intimidating his critics by arbitrarily revoking security clearances. Stay tuned," Warner said in a Twitter post on Friday.

Trump Underestimates Brennan If He Thinks He Can Gag Ex-CIA Chief - Biden (https://sputniknews.com/us/201808161067227488-usa-trump-biden-brennan-cia-clearance/)

Earlier this week Trump revoked the security clearance of former CIA Director John Brennan, a vocal critic of the president, which drew the ire of opponents and free speech advocates. The White House is also reviewing the security clearances of other Obama administration officials including former FBI Director James Comey and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Brennan in a recent New York Times piece accused Trump of colluding with Russia vis-a-vis the 2016 election — a charge the president and the Kremlin have repeatedly denied.

On Friday, Senator Rand Paul in an interview said Brennan deserved to have his clearance revoked (https://sputniknews.com/us/201808151067221648-Trump-Revokes-Brennan-Security-Clearance/) for leaking classified intelligence information.

Even though this is just posturing, its so incredibly stupid its hard to believe.

This would undermine the entire purpose of the executive branch, and entrench unelected deep state goons. Which by the way violates the concept of representation and democracy.

These people are deranged.

Not only that he should be criminally charged.

Somebody tell me how revoking a security clearance stops anyone from talking? All you could do is prevent him from receiving new classified information which he shouldn't get anyway.

Here is my guess. When you hold a security clearance you are bound by the rules of the entity that granted you that clearance. Now you retire. If the security clearance is revoked you can chat away about what you know with no rules to bind you. Hence security clearances are held in place for retired people (or those separated) to let them know they cannot reveal what they already think they know. Once the security clearance is revoked secrets can be revealed with no penalty.

I think you want people who know state secrets to take them with them to their grave. Who really wants to know who killed JFK when we are having so much fun speculating?

Life is dear and an accelerated schedule to terminate is not in my plan.

Is there any state secret worth keeping that Raytheon does not already know?
