IPS announces safety enhancements at Arsenal Tech Friday after 13 students arrested in large fight

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Public Schools says "safety enhancements" will be in place Friday at Arsenal Tech High School after 13 students were arrested and eight people were injured when a fight broke out Thursday afternoon.

Three of the injured people were transported to local hospitals, the other five were treated on the scene, according to a spokesperson for IPS.

News 3 spoke to a parent and students who are both concerned. The father of two did not want to reveal their identities to protect his children.

"Once I saw the first video that looked like a riot and school administrators trying to stop it, it looked completely out of control,” the father says.

The daughter says, "it's crazy to me how people just woke up and have that much anger in them."

The daughter says it happened around 7:30 a.m. Monday morning before class began and she captured the cell phone video before getting pushed.

She's not sure what the students were fighting about but says it involved upperclassman.

They were punching, kicking, slamming people to the ground, they were just doing everything they could...somebody got their lip busted,” the student says.
The most shocking part is she says this wasn't the only fight Monday, but it was the only one captured on video.

MOLINE, Illinois - There was an increase in security Thursday morning at Moline High School following a large fight Wednesday evening where one person was shot.

equila Johnson is one of many parents concerned about her children's safety at Moline High School.

"My son actually showed me a video of a huge fight that happened at McDonald's on Tuesday, I believe, and there was actually firearms and knives in that video," Johnson said.

Something Moline Detective Mike Griffin said is getting out of hand.

FRESNO (KSEE) -- Some students will face disciplinary action after a huge fight broke out late Friday night after a football game between Edison and Central High Schools that was held at Ratcliffe Stadium on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno, causing part of the street to be shut down.

Video shows some of the people involved kicking cars. Superintendent Nelson says they believe most of the people involved in the fracas were not students. But the ones who are, and who were identified are facing consequences. "Any major sporting event there can be spectators who choose to make poor decisions, if our students are involved we hold them accountable to the greatest degree possible", says Nelson.

Canton police arrested eight teenagers Tuesday after a large fight broke out in the parking lot of Canton McKinley High School.

After officers arrived at the brawl, those involved ran away into the neighborhood surrounding the school. A large group of them were later found near Abbott Place Northwest and Broadway Ave. Northwest, where they were taken into custody for disorderly conduct.

Only one of the suspects, 18-year-old Nyron Isiah Driggs, is an adult. Driggs was booked in the Stark County Jail, while the other seven were taken to the Multi County Juvenile Attention Center.

As a result of the incident, Canton police officers will be stationed at all city schools throughout the rest of the week.

Middle schoolers and parents in neighborhood brawl, one stabbed

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A stabbing has been reported at University Avenue and Alfredda Delaney following a large fight that occurred there Monday afternoon. According to witnesses, several middle schoolers were involved after a school bus dropped them off around 4 p.m. Monday afternoon.

"Absolutely just shocking. I was terrified," Rebecca Augustine said. Her son has autism and deals with bullying at Bearden Middle School. It was cause for extra concern. "Worried about him getting on the bus and just getting to school. It was a very big concern."

According to Knoxville Police, a call came into 911 around 4:01 p.m. A large fight broke out involving approximately twenty people at its height.

According to police, the fight apparently started with four middle school children from Bearden Middle School who had just exited the bus with adult family members waiting.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A total of 14 students were arrested at Johnson Alternative School in Nashville after a fight broke out between students in a portable classroom.

According to Metro Nashville Police Department Spokesman Don Aaron, a School Resource Officer responded to the classroom and called for assistance.

The teacher in the classroom was assaulted by a 13-year-old female, but was not injured in the assault.

When officers tried to take her into custody, the teen girl assaulted two of them. A third officer was assaulted by another 13 year-old-girl in the classroom.

A 13 year-old-boy also broke out several windows in the portable classroom and a separate 13-year-old broke out several windows in the principal's office during the fight.

The teen from principal's office was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of a minor hand injury.

Aaron said fights also broke out in the main building and parking lot at the same time of the initial brawl. Multiple officers were called to assist to those areas as well.

During a fight in the main building, a police officer was struck in the face several times by a 14-year-old.

Most of the teens were charged with disorderly conduct, but some were charged with assault, vandalism and resisting arrest.
