Interesting chart, but even as complex as it appears, at the same time it looks overly simplified. I'd be interested in seeing some of the sources the creator used to trace some of the connections.

Conquistador Americas and upwelling of Vodoo from the Carribean is nowhere represented and Americas on the whole just a shade lighter green than Europe is tainted bias.

Should be blue/green, aqua maybe

Last year I actually PMed him to compliment his American English. The American idioms and slang and jargon he sometimes uses are absolutely perfect. Not even a hint that American English isn't his first language. Far better than me. Amazing really because he also spends a lot of time in Turkey and probably blends in there too.

Indeed! Must have had a mini stroke or something when I wrote that. I did score 25/25 on a grammar/language test which only 4% of Americans get full scores on, according to the test.

The odd thing is that I don’t have any formal understanding of grammatical rules, I only know it by instinct. The majority of my adult life I have spent outside of Sweden, mostly been communicating in English, learning by error I guess.

My Turkish understanding is rudimentary. I get by in a professional setting with some translation help from my assistant (primarily when giving a report of findings to a new patient, who doesn’t speak good English), can have simple conversations, direct a taxi, order food at a restaurant, etc... But I can’t have any deeper conversations in Turkish yet. However it really isn’t much of a necessity to have deeper conversations with Turks that doesn’t understand English generally. ;D
