A virtual wall much more than a heavily overbuilt construction project which would take years. Defend something like this with immediate air superiority -

Install sensors and fly drones along the length of it to monitor every foot of it. Have military bases (Uncle Sugar has built them in nearly every country on Earth, why not on our own border) built near the border for immediate response to incursions. Any hostile forces try to breach that respond in kind. Have the military capture the invaders so ICE or Customs officers don't have to listen to the woeful tales about how "...this is not political...poor, poor pitiful me." Any hostile force show up attempting to breach border barrier while armed simply kill 'em when fired upon. Put the 'migrants' on a bus back to their home country.

Problem is... 7000 pushing their way forward except those 12 in front are moving forward. A few agonizing cries are not going to stop that herd. Immediate threat stopped by dead bodies lining the wire for the rest to walk upon.

Am I missing something here?

Our 'leaders' don't secure the border because THEY DO NOT WANT TO SECURE THE BORDER. They certainly have the means to shut down all entry through various cost effective solutions at all levels, from the families of invading illegals to the drug running cartels.
